#87—Bid Low at Long Beach's Bike Auction

The City of Long Beach will auction off more than 85 bikes Saturday.

Imagine cruising on the boardwalk bike lane on a beautiful Schwinn bicycle. Better yet, imagine that you bought for only $20. So you think that's a far fetch?

If so, then you might want to head down to Kennedy Plaza this Saturday for the City of Long Beach’s annual bike auction — #87 on Patch's 100 Things To Do In Long Beach series.

More than 85 bikes that were abandoned throughout the city by last year’s summer dwellers— including Schwinns, Raleighs, Huffys, Treks, Hampton Cruisers and Roadmasters —in good to excellent condition will be up for auction starting at 10 a.m. Potential buyers can arrive an hour earlier to inspect and test drive the bike of their interest.

All bids must be paid in cash and the bikes must be picked up by the end of the day. The Long Beach Police Department will be on hand to register the purchased bicycles.

"We encourage everyone to register their bicycles," said Lt. James McCormack. "In the event of a lost or stolen bicycle, the serial ID registered to the bike helps officers identify the bike and the owner."

During the auction, Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford will distribute free bike helmets, and C.U.R.B., a local non-profit organization that holds an annual bike ride around the city, will offer information about their programs that focus on assisting the physically challenged to overcome barriers.

So whatever your bike of choice, aim high, bid low and peddle home in style. Just make sure not to mention how much you paid for your Schwinn to fellow riders.
