Fire at Former Vito's Restaurant

LBFD extinguishes kitchen blaze at boardwalk eatery.

A fire broke out at the former Vito’s restaurant at the western end of the boardwalk Wednesday morning.

The Long Beach Fire Department received a call at 10:41 a.m. reporting a fire at 5 New York Avenue, now called Overlook, where firefighters found a small blaze located in the wall behind kitchen equipment on the first floor of the restaurant.

“There was a minor extension to the apartments on the second floor,” Corbett said. “All residents were evacuated and the fire was extinguished by the first arriving engine company. Walls and ceilings needed to be opened to make sure all of the fire was knocked down.”

All fire units were released in about 90 minutes, and two firefighters suffered minor injuries, Corbett said.

The fire did not appear suspicious, he added. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Health Department were notified.
