Geraldine Moore Honored as Nurse of Excellence

Dr. Geraldine Moore was recognized as Long Beach Medical Center’s 2011 Nurse of Excellence at a reception hosted by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council in May.

The annual event pays tribute to nurses who demonstrate outstanding leadership and clinical practice. Moore, who is coordinator of HealthStyles programs at LBMC and a professor at Molloy College, was selected for this honor by her peers and joins an elite group of individuals from hospitals across Nassau and Suffolk counties.    

“Geraldine Moore exemplifies the best of the best in nursing,” said Faye Duda, chief nursing officer at LBMC. “Her commitment to public health and dedication to lifelong learning have set her apart as a role model to others.”  

Moore has been a nurse at the medical center for 30 years. As coordinator of its HealthStyles Program, she coordinates more than 60 community wellness and health screenings each year.

The Healthy Sundays initiative, developed by Moore in partnership with two community churches, used the pulpit to bring weekly health lectures and screenings to the Hispanic/Latino populations in Long Beach and Oceanside.

She also developed an asthma education program for elementary school children in the Long Beach School District. The program was successful enough that she was asked to expand it to include middle school and conduct a "train the trainer" program to empower district school nurses to continue the program.

Moore is a certified asthma educator and serves as the vice-chair of the Asthma Coalition of Long Island (ACLI) and co-chair of the Schools/Environment Committee of ACLI.

In her faculty role at Molloy College, Moore serves on several committees, including the Faculty Professionalism Committee, Technology Committee and the Nursing Graduation Pinning Committee. She also serves as the faculty moderator of the Student Nurse Association and often chaperones student nurses to local and national conferences. 

This year, Moore accompanied 40 nursing students and faculty members to Spain, where they met with nursing students and hospital leaders to exchange best practices in nursing care.

Moore holds a bachelors degree in nursing and Masters degree in nursing education from Molloy College and a doctorate in education and technology from Dowling College. She lives in Wantagh with her husband, Ray, and has four children, Kelly, Edward, Jaclyn and Bridget.
