New Hotel to Replace The Jackson

Out with the old hotel, and in with a new one.

The Jackson Hotel, at 401-405 East Broadway, was sold last week and new owners will reconstruct the building and open a new hotel, renamed the Long Beach Hotel, possibly by next year.

While workers were busy stripping the hotel and throwing out mounds of garbage Tuesday morning, David Rosario, the project manager, told Patch that a group of local investors purchased the property and plan to renovate the building and open a new hotel with 122 rooms with nightly rates between $169 to $189.

“It’s going to be a very family oriented hotel,” Rosairo said.

The renovations will be “big,” they will come in a few phases, and the new hotel's appearance will be “rustic but still modern," he added. Asked about a potential opening date, he said it was too difficult to pinpoint but indicated that it may be next year.

Rosairo declined to provide name the new owners, but said that more information about the project will be released in August.

Scott Kemins, the city’s building commissioner, said he has not received plans and permits for the proposed hotel.

“I know there’s a new owner, and I know I have an interior demolition permit application,” Kemins said. “And that’s where we’re at. They’re supposed to be coming in with more stuff, as far as the renovations and what they’ll be doing to the building. But I haven’t gotten anything as of yet.”

Corey Klein, the city’s corporation counsel, said that the facility has been grandfathered in as a hotel. “From what I’m told the people who purchased it will keep it as a hotel,” he said.

The hotel, which had fallen into disrepair, was formerly owned by Jackson Associates of Nassau. An attorney that represented the group in years past said that he believes the property went into contract in April and was sold last week.

Klein said that in order to sell the property, the former owners had to paid all their debts in full. “They’ve paid all their bills, they paid their water bill, they paid all their taxes,” he said.

Some residential neighbors said they noticed workers at the hotel last weeked, stripping the facility of various items, including televisions, cabinets, glass and sheetrock.

“Oddly, there are no dumpsters and no work permits posted in any of the windows, nor have any of the neighbors been engaged in any way,” one neighbor said. “We are all intensely curious and concerned.”

He and a group of his neighbors plan to attend the City Council meeting at City Hall at 7 p.m. Tuesday and ask city officials questions about the new development.

“We plan to deliver a handout with our concerns to each member and will have extra copies for attendees,” he said.
