Letter to Editor: Support Kids' Cancer Bake Sale
Letter-writer asks for community's support for this weekend's fundraiser.
To the Editor:
Cookies for Kids' Cancer was created to raise awareness of and funds for pediatric cancer research. But it all started with a kid fighting cancer and his parents’ desire to help him and others.
That child was Liam Witt. The bake sales this weekend is in loving memory of this fighting warrior who lost his battle this January and to honor our hero, Kyle James Williams, who was a friend of Liam’s. Kyle continues to fight for his life every day.
Neuroblastoma is the rare form of childhood cancer that took Liam’s life. Only 30 percent of children diagnosed survive because little money is spent on research. In fact, pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children under 18.
When we all heard that Amy Farina Fornabaio’s nephew was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, we knew we needed to support her and her family through the difficult days ahead. As Gina Marks and Cindy O’Brien stated: “One day a little boy named Kyle came into our lives and quickly became part of our Petrey family. We follow his journey and hope and pray that God will give Kyle his wish to live his life like any other child.”
Jennifer Bartko, owner of Petrey Real Estate, states, “The toll pediatric cancer takes on patients and their families is profound. We have seen this struggle first hand.”
Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is about all the children who have lost their lives to cancer, and to improve the survival rates for all forms of pediatric cancer.
Please join us and support the Cookies for Kids Cancer Bake Sales from March 4 to 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at Petrey East, at 254 East Park Ave. in Long Beach; and Petrey Real Estate, at 860 W. Beech Street in Long Beach and 2041 Park St. in Atlantic Beach. For more information, please contact me at 516-857-2807.

The importance of this cause cannot be understated. We have all heard about the children who suffer from this dreaded disease and never truly think that it could ever happen to someone in our own family. Our entire family has had the misfortune to experience this and our awareness of how devastating a card it is for families to deal with is something that cannot be explained. I had the honor of spending a little time with Liam while visiting Kyle at Sloan. The strength and bravery Liam exhibited then is still carried on by my nephew Kyle and all his little friends each and every day. I ask that you all take a few minutes of your time and support this cause.
Children are what life is all about. Lets do what we can to give them as much as they want out of it.

Kyle is my son. I NEVER in a million years ever thought he would be fighting for his life at age 5, now 6 1/2 because of a rare and deadly form of cancer called Neuroblastoma. But he is. And because the government only gives 3% of cancer research funding towards pediatrics......the rest is up to us. Kyle did not not respond to typical chemotherapy treatment and has been on 3 different clinical trials since last year and moving towards a 4th in the hopes of getting to remission. I want to say THANK YOU to Michele for organizing this. My sister Amy, Cindy,Gina and all of the ladies who care so much about Kyle and created a little home for him there at the LB office. He was talking about all of you yesterday to the bone marrow transplant team and told them how he has a real job:) We will NEVER forget how you helped us and gave him a sense of normalcy and a place to go when he couldn't be around other kids or people because of his low counts. You are all wonderful and we just cannot thank you enough for STILL supporting us from hundreds of miles away. We love and miss you! Leslie Williams, Kyle's Mommy

Kyle moved into Long Beach for a year to get treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering and touched so many peoples lives, its unbelieveable. One of them was mine. His smile lit up our whole office. When he came through the doors of Petrey Real Estate we all dropped what we were doing and focused on Kyle. Nothing else mattered. He was there fighting for his life and still is, so whats a couple of hours to try to make him enjoy!!!!
I miss you Kyle Williams!!!! Hope u can come over and make some pizza again soon.

As a young woman who has had to watch her father go through cancer diagnosis 3 seperate times in my life I feel that Cancer Research, and support of this cause, is incredibly important. It's vital. My heart breaks thinking of what he has gone through. Reading about Kyle and learning more about his story from his aunt bring tears to my eyes. Kyle is a very strong, positive, wonderful young boy with an undoubtely positive attitude, as is many young children in his situation. It is a disappointing fact to see so many of us ignoring local events like these, that strive to bring awareness to important causes like pediatric cancer. Cancer has become a sort of epidemic in this day and age, and it's difficult enough thining of what it does to an adult, but to watch children go through these painful treatments and hear stories like this is heartbreaking. Kyle's story is local. But if everyone around the country stood up and highlited unfortunate situations like these perhaps we will then be able to raise increased awareness to hopefully cure and/or prevent this diesese from taking another life, and from robbing a young boy or girl from his or her childhood. Now is an excellent time for the community to get together and rally in support of this brave young boy and all his struggles, because he deserves health, happiness, a childhood... but we cannot yet give him back his health at this point in time. What we CAN do is stand in support of him and raise awareness to do whatever we can.

Such an amazing way to show support against this ugly disease. These beautiful children should not ever know the pain that is cancer. One year ago I lost my precious 3 year old niece, Adrianna Cavanagh, to Neuroblastoma so I know the fear and pain that comes along with this. I pray not one more family feels the pain of this loss. WE NEED TO FIND A CURE. NOW.

We love our cousin Kyle. Not a day goes by that we don't think of him and his mom and dad. We want our Kyle to be back with his cousin Rachel, just one year younger, so they can play and grow up together.

A co-worker of mine lost her grandson to this horrible disease in 2009. I pray that a cure is found soon. Children are so innocent and do not deserve this kind of pain and suffering. Neither do their parents. Bringing awareness is crucial to help these children survive. Kyle is always in my prayers as is his family. FKF!!!

I work with Kyle's aunt Amy, and this is an absolutely amazing thing they are putting together for Children's Cancer. These children do not deserve a millisecond of feeling the pain of this disease. He is in my prayers every night and also my family's who does not even know my co-worker. My heart goes out to her sister and her family and I wish nothing but a quick recovery for this beautiful little boy. Its a shame that these children are losing there lives and their childhoods or going through these horrible treatments. Now what everyone can do in the local area is donate their time, cookies or money to help these innocent children try to fight this ugly disease and try to give back what is rightfully theirs. Amy I love you to death and all my love goes out to you and your family. FIGHT KYLE FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also to Liam Witt's family, all my love and prayers are with you.

I have had the pleasure of meeting KYLE - he is a wonderful and brave boy and I PRAY for his healing every day.It is important that the public know that so little money is available for research for children's cancer. I know first hand how devestating this can be for not only the child but the whole family. We have to keep donating and keep up fund raising to get the word out there about this horrible disease. FKF.

After meeting Kyle a little over 3 years ago.. I knew he was a special boy.. He came into the Jappell house and was filled with joy and excitement when his cousin Ryan let him wear his FDNY helmet.. It was one of the cutest sights to be seen! Ever since that day, he has had a special place in my heart.... I have seen him go through such heartache that no child should ever have to go through at such a young age. That is why everyone should go to Long Beach today and support Kyle's fight .. and memorialize Liam Witt... by buying delicious cookies! Support the Williams and Witt family and many others in the fight for pediatric cancer.. FKF!!! All my love, Jackie

It was wonderful for us at Petrey Real Estate to get to know Kyle while he was living in Long Beach and getting treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Unfortunately I know first hand how childhood cancer can devastate a family. I lost my 11 year old daughter to Leukemia in 1986. I hope the cures for childhood cancers have increased since then but they have not increased enough. Breast cancer, colon cancer and doms of the other more common cancers get funding, but there are so many different types of cancers that are under supported. Please help us in any way you can. FKF!!!

A BIG THANK YOU to Joe Kellard and Patch's support of the Cookies for Kids' Cancer fundraiser all weekend long. Your site gave those an opportunity to write their heartfelt comments about Kyle and the sweet Liam who lost his battle to Neuroblastoma this past January. and spread awareness for the desperate need for pediatric cancer research.
I can never thank enough the Bakers who baked with so much love, the tireless Volunteers who packaged and sold the cookies (including the students from the life skills program at Long Beach High School and members of the Honor Society) and those who came by and bought the cookies. Much thanks also to Jennifer Bartko for giving us the space at Petrey Real Estate (where Kyle was always welcomed when he was living in New York, undergoing treatments at Sloan). We raised a great deal of money for our first Cookies for Kids Cancer Bake Sale.
We will be planning another bake sale in May, with details to follow very soon. So, please do not tuck those aprons or mixers away, we will be joining 700 bake sales across the country for a Nationwide Bake Sale for Cookies for Kids Cancer.
