Patch Question: King Kullen Coming?
Will you shop at the new supermarket just over the bridge in Island Park?
Work is underway to build a King Kullen and adjoining shopping center in Island Park, just over the Michael Valente Memorial Long Beach Bridge.
The supermarket is the centerpiece of this 62,675-square-foot development, at 80 Waterfront Blvd., neighboring Bridgeview Yacht Club, Jordan’s Lobster Farms, Paddy McGees and Coyote Grill. King Kullen is expected to open later this year, according to the Oceanside/Island Park Herald.
Long Beach’s three supermarkets — Associated in the East End, C-Town in the West End and Waldbaum’s in the center of town — will have to compete with this new supermarket immediately over the bridge. Or will they? Will grocery shoppers from Long Beach drive to a neighboring town for their milk, bread and eggs? Are their Island Park counterparts who shop at Long Beach supermarkets going to "shop local" instead?
Answer this question in the comments below: Do you expect you'll become a regular shopper at the new King Kullen in Island Park?

I like King Kullen, but it definitely depends on the prices and sales. My only problem with shopping there would be the one traffic light you would wait at to get back into Long Beach. Otherwise, one would have to go out that other road with no traffic light and that causes potential problems.

I have to agree with everyone who cites "price" as a major factor. However, if prices are hovering around "equal", then the quality of the following will be the tiebreakers:
1) Parking.
2) Deli - service and quality both count.
3) Produce - selection and quality.
4) Meat - selection and quality.

The Long Beach Police have been ordered to leave the panhandlers, drunks and harassers who hang out at Waldbaums alone. This scourge of mutants bother women shopping there every day.
Laocoon predicts Waldbaums will be closing within a year of King Kullens' opening if the police continue to permit this mutant behavior.

King Kullen owns Walbaums.
The Long Beach Waldbaums store is being replaced by the King Kullens. Waldbaums is being closed.
The 20 year tax abatement and free rent deal given Waldbaums by the City of Long Beach expired two years ago. The new Kings Kullen store will pay half the taxes of Waldbaums, ad the City of Long Beach is not in their pocket.
The decline of Long Beach is well under way, and Waldbaums will be one more casualty of the recession and this City's mismanagement.

if this is true, why wouldn't king kullen attempt to strike a deal with the city of long beach before spending so much money on new construction ? and if they did try to reach a deal, why weren't the public notified. LB'ers dont want a big empty strip mall next to our train station.

The City is quietly looking at potential private and "public" uses of the property after Waldbaums leaves. Expansion of City offices, welfare, social security, unemployment and various other entitlement services are not out of the question. Substance abuse clinic?
Ever see the former strip malls in Roosevelt, Elmont, Wyandanch?

Well this is all very interesting. I just moved here from Massapequa. I shopped at King Kullen out there & Pathmark in Seaford. Pathmark is very comparable to Waldbaums as they're both owened by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. King Kullen tends to be more expensive. Since I've moved to Long Beach I've shopped at Waldbaums. I am a slight built woman who has never been "afraid" to go there. I have found the employees at Waldbaums to be the most professional and friendliest of anywhere I have ever shopped. I moved from a town void of diversity either by race or socioeconomics. The children there are sick or dying from drug problems that would break your hearts. Just because things look pretty, shiny & new doesn't mean they are. Keep your money in Long Beach. King Kullen in Island Park is not the answer. The great Atlantic Tea & Pacific Tea Co. is in chapter 11, so there is a great chance that Waldbaums will be gone. Maybe it's time to actively go out & find another business to fill the spot. Long Beach is a paradise. Don't let it slip away.

If Waldbaums closes and the shopping mall there becomes a ghost town, you people have no one to blame but yourselves. You exaggerate the problems there, you display a fear of Black people, and you loathe anyone who seems to have less money than you do. I smell a racist and elitist attutude among many posters hete who spread unwarranted fear about a shopping mall that attracts people of all colors and economic levels. These same bigots cant wait to take their money over to lily white Island Park where they wont bump into people who look different than they do..
I did my own personal survey yesterday by walking around that same much maligned shopping ma and did see 4 or 5 black faces there, a few Latinos and Asians at the recycling machines, a Black guy collecing the carts, and just 3 empty storefronts. i saw no vagrants hanging around...just shoppers going about thejr business. I didnt get mugged, hassled, or my tires peed on.
Im not sure if some of you are just liars, racists, or exaggerators, but your attitude is ugly for sure and will be ruinous for the economy of our City.

Eddie I don't know where you get your info but Waldbaums is owned by A&P, not King Kullen. King Kullen is an independent, family owned business. If you want proof just go to their sites and see. Waldbaums accepts the cards from A&P, Pathmark and the likes because they are all owned by A&P. Please get your facts straight before posting.

I would definitely TRY out King Kullen's. I also shop at Associated, and would continue, as it is in my neighborhood.. I also go to Stop and Shop in O'side, and they just did some sprucing up. I am wondering if the traffic will be an issue in Island Park.
I almost never go to Waldbaums.

Unlike many of you, I go out of my way to shop in the Long Beach Waldbaums and the neighboring stores and bank there. I dont want that place to close down like you do and I have no fear of fellow Black or Latino shoppers.

I live a stones throw from the Associated market, yet I purchase only coldcuts and milk in it. No online coupons, no doubling and a silly policy regarding the supermarket "card " system has made them essentially uncompetitive in the area. The parking around there is a joke. I leave town anyway for produce..........Waldbaums is way overpriced; King Kullen will be a viable alternative if they come up with a way to alleviate the traffic problems this will surely cause.

I have a suggestion for you guys...
Take your food shopping over to King Kullen in Island Park where its safe and White and then try to play tennis, basketball or handball in Shell Creek Park right down the street from there.
You will see signs posted at the gate...NO LONG
BEACH RESIDENTS PERMITTED. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE A VALID ID.
The residents of Island Park have shut out any Long Beach minorities from playing ball there.
So spend your money in Island Park, help destroy Long Beach business, but go back over the bridge after shopping. Island Park doesnt want you hanging around.

Lloyd I guess you don't see the benfits of collecting welfare..while all of us are minding our own business running in for groceries between work and playing chauffer to our children the group of men drinking from brown paper bags by Waldbaums but if shooed away will go across the parking lot by the old Wendys takeout menu. How about no lights to light the parking lot at night, that should make anyone nervous shopping at night anywhere even in Lily white Island Park.

Definatly! Waldbaums fruit is unfresh and the prices aren't great. Customers are also subjected to the smell of beer when entering as that is where the redemption machine is. The only other places are Associated in Lido (overpriced) and C town on the west end (also not too fresh). It'll be a nice welcome...hope it works out!!

i would try king kullen, in a second. i do not enjoy shopping at the waldbaum's in long beach - the parking lot is congested, the carts lock up if you park in the 'wrong place', the layout of the store is terrible, every time i go there, there is an issue at check out, and the can redemption is unpleasant. the price of the food is always higher by 10 or 20 cents per item comparable to the waldbaums in oceanside. the shopping center is dirty and unpleasant to walk deters me from going to the other shops in the strip.

On Sunday my gal and I were strolling on the boardwalk, and we noticed quite a few people walking their dogs on it. One big Retreiver decided to squat and take a huge pee right there by the Super Block. She was a nice doggy, but should have taken her business elsewhere, since her owner wasnt going to sop it up.
So using your logic...WE SHOULD NEVER WALK ON THE BOARDWALK AGAIN AND DRIVE OVER TO ATLANTIC BEACH NEXT TIME.

Lloyd.Lloyd....there is a difference between humans and dogs. The dog does not know any better. Your comparison makes no sense. That shopping center is a dump and has been one for years. I agree. The prices, selection, cleanliness, and quality at the Waldbaums are fine. Plenty of parking too. No place is perfect, but its as good there as any other markets and strip mall.
.Right now I am siting in the parking.lot of the Waldbaums shopping center on Atlantic Ave in Baldwin. And guess what? There are at least 2 empty stores in there, with a big "For Rent by Breslin" sign in front of the lot.

I lived in N Mass for over 25 years and shopped nearly exckusively in the Waldbaums there on Hicksville Rd. It has ouadtrd the local A&P , Foodtown, Bohacks, Edwsrds, Pergament, etc.
And its better than the Pathmark up on the Tpke. or on Merrick Rd.

Heck No...spare me King Kullen. I'm invested in Long Beach's Farmers Market for the Long Haul. That's right. Even if you're a Nay Sayer of the Long Beach Farmers Market, we have the best Farmers Market in all of Long Island and that's just the icing. The substance is that real Long Island Neighbors are providing fresh and nutritious bio-dynamic goods for us to enjoy, and for them to hire locals to sell as vendors and make decent livings. If people cheat on their farmers, they're most likely cheaters of their spouses as well. "how you do one thing, is how you do everything."-Aristotle

False, Every product is grown within 150 miles away. You go into a King Kullen,Waldbaums, etc and over 85% of the products are made and trucked to your energy hoarding cave of waxed aisles from over 700 miles away. Yes there are Cleaners and register employees, but The Farms at MY (And even though you are ridiculously partisan against it, it's still your farmer's market too) Farmer's markets take loans from their local friendly banks , have large staffs who they practically house, and oh yea treat you humbly and appropriately which is more than I can say for You LMB.

Produce prices at Waldbaum's are outrageous. for fruits and veg's you go to a green grocer like Biggest Banana or that place by the RR tracks in Island Park or VT Chinese supermarket in Hempstead where they are half the price of Waldbaum's. Another thing i don't like about supermarkets like Walbaum's is that the deli closes earlier than the rest of the store. Fairway deli stays open till 11PM like the rest of the store.
I know most people don't want to be bothered traveling to shop.... but I am always out and about so I shop wherever the deals and quality are good.
I just hope King Kullen doesn't cause a traffic back-up problem on the bridge. I saw how that Pop's Seafood Shack was opened apparently without a traffic study and only one road in and out right onto the bridge. I started seeing so many near misses right away. Hopefully the new road for King Kullen will be well thought out.

Aside from being overpriced, Waldbaum's does in fact smell like stale beer on the way in. I find the majority, not all, of the checkout people inept, shopping carts in disarray in the lot, and yes, people begging for money from spray painted girl's beach cruiser bikes makes me welcome a King Kullen in Island Park. I drive to the Fruit Stand in Island Park, Trader Joes and Foodtown(?) in Oceanside as it is. I wonder what City Council wisdom has in store for the area? Hmmm?...A .99c store? A Good Will? I agree with ya, Misty.
And I think I've figgered out Trader Joe's big attraction.
It's the free jalapeno bean dip on a nacho sample that they give away to all those fat "schnorrers" (beggers) in their designer oufits and diamond tennis bracelets, who keep hanging out at the back table looking for more free handouts.
I have noticed more BMWs, Benzs, and Audis squeezed into TJs lot than at our Waldbaums. Maybe they go there for the TJ beer. For $3.99 a six pack they can pick up "Simple Pleasures Pilsner", Old Vienna Lager, or Trader Jose's in a can.
That'll impress their friends at their next dinner party.
I cant wait for when our Waldbaums bashing Patch buddies finally get their wish and put that racially and ethnically mixed store out of business.
Can you imagine all the bitchin' and moanin' here when a Compare Supermarcado opens up there?
I' d love to read the reactiond to all those "Section 8 scum" carrying out large bags of fresh beans and rice to go along with their cans of Goya brand sauces and fruit drinks.
