Man was seen entering water near jetty Saturday afternoon.

A swimmer drowned in the ocean in Long Beach Saturday afternoon.

According to Richard Corbett, chief of the Long Beach Fire Department, a 39-year-old male swimmer was in distress in the ocean off Edwards Boulevard beach at about 4:11 p.m., when the LBFD received the call about the incident.

“Witnesses said that they saw a male enter the water next to the jetties at Edwards Boulevard wearing long pants,” Corbett said.

Rescue units from Long Beach, Island Park, Freeport and Atlantic Beach, along the Nassau County Police Department’s aviation and marine units and the United States Coast Guard responded to the scene.

The missing swimmer, who was indentified only as a non-Long Beach resident, was located about 30 minutes later, pulled from the ocean in cardiac arrest and transported to the Long Beach Medical Center by an Island Park ambulance with LBFD paramedics aboard. Soon after he pronounced dead at LBMC.

“Even though every resource was deployed to help this person, and the staff at the medical center emergency room did everything they could, he was pronounced a short time later,” Corbett said.
