I'm glad the folks in the East End have a *real* pharmacy again. At my end on town we have Kings,Read Morean d they've helped us all out in so many ways. Having a real Pharmacist to talk to is a world better than punching in orders on your phone and getting robo-calls like with the chains. Welcome, our town needs more stores like yours. Hope your neighbors drop the chain stores and run to you in droves.

Support your local pharmacy. I only use Kings in the West End.

A consultant is hired who performs a nationwide search, putting ads in far-away newspapers andRead Moreinter viewing veteran professionals who deserve the job. They find the best qualified candidate is the political hack chosen by the Democratic District Leader. Then they make recommendation to the Democrat-chosen school board which appoints the hack. A public relations firm is hired to construct a glowing resume for the hack and handle any community fallout steaming from his any past communist/criminal/immoral activity. The cost of the search is passed on to the taxpayers along with the additional expenses of securing the candidate, such as gasoline for his whole family as long as he lives, purchase of a luxury automobile, and relocation and housing allowances. These costs are promoted to emotional women voters as necessities "for the children". The hack then kicks back a monetary donation to the Democrats. In three to five years he is replaced and the process is repeated.

Please be specific. If you're talking about Joe Kellard I think you are completely off the railsRead Moreon this. I never met the man except via emails. He jumped through hoops to be impartial/middle of the road. My own posts are currently anti dem because they currently control city hall. I have stomped all over Harvey W several times, but I defended him on the beach disaster rising from hurricane Sandy. Harvey stood solidly for the Pete King/US Army Corps of Engineers plan that would have saved LB from much of the damage. I also have hammered the republican city council who shot down that plan at the behest of a noisy group of out of town surfers who packed a single council meeting. I'm a registered republican only because I registered as such because a friend starting out in republican politics asked me to do so. I think that all of this tea party crap is destroying the GOP as is the "conservative" neo nazi rubbish that accompanies the tea party. Joe Kellard was as straight as an arrow and is missed.

@lear jet, eddie- I know the three of us have very different political views, but I think we allRead Morewan t what is best for our island. The old JK Patch actually did some investigative reporting, which we'll never see again. This Patch is computer-generated and aims at a young demographic. Many of the "articles" are just pasted in blogs, unchecked and unverified info. All they want is articles with "key words" which encourage click-through revenue. An example is today's "The War on Women Marches Onward." This is actually written by a guy on an anti-pit bull campaign, from Waltham MA. Eddie, I'd guess all 3 of us are over 50. On the web and on TV, we are not the targeted audience any more. The ads are served up by tracking companies like ATWOLA, owned by AOL. The choice of ads is from what sites you've visited before and what articles you click on today. I've also found that I get a completely different "front page" depending on which web browser I use, Internet Explorer or Firefox. Honestly, I think political party influence doesn't control Patch content. It's just money, big money. Content is meaningless unless it contains terms that draw clicks. As for political parties, the past year has made me lose faith in ALL of them, they're just a shill for the money behind them. Realtors own Long Beach, not the Dems. (Along with a few other special interests.) Our Elections are pretty much like the old Soviet Union's. "My" Dems expected me to vote for criminal Tom Suozzi for County Exec??? They are "my" Dems no more. Urban planning in our area is just run according to the old maxim "money talks, nobody walks." ......... this is way off topic, but the background of the new Principal really needs to be vetted. I'm trying to figure out how to put it into words.

Lear, I have the highest regards for Joe Kellard. It was his former boss to whom I referred. IRead Moreagr ee that Joe truly tried to be an impartial journalist, and I feel he did a great job. Castles Made of Sand April 17, 2014 at 01:52 PM
There are not dozens of designs. Its plastic sheet pile or pressure treated wood. You have a fewRead Moreopt ions in thickness of plastic sheet, coated or uncoated poles and whalers, and thickness of tie-back rods. That’s about it. The height of the bulkhead is what’s in question. Long Beach would like to see every new bulkhead be constructed taller than what they are now. Most average about 7’ above sea level and the “requested” height is 9 feet. If your neighbor’s new (or old) bulkhead is at 7’ and you build a new one at 9’, you will be flooded just the same as if you were at 7’. That much is obvious. Anything shy of constructing all bayfront homes with higher bulkheads and installing gates at the end of the canals is a pointless conversation. Remember too that bulkheads don’t hold back water. They are engineered to keep earth from falling into the water. Sure, a higher bulkhead will prevent some minimal washover in the occasional Nor’easter and low level hurricane but people need to get it through their heads that nothing will stop the flooding of another Sandy. We live on a sand dune that would have been gone years ago if not for the engineered jetties. Sea level is rising folks, it’s an undeniable fact for this region. Elevate your home, or go about your daily life and just forget about the “next” storm and deal with it when or if it happens again. The entire drainage system on this barrier Island is old and damaged. Remember, it’s a sand dune that we live on. Shifting sands over time have created cracked, back-pitched, and sand infiltrated drainage systems. Again, shy of ripping up every single road and re-piping the whole island to the tune of 100’s of millions, we will get flooded more and more often. It’s time to move, elevate, or stop talking about it. The City bulkhead program is $850 per linear foot paid back over 20 years with interest. Local contractors get between $450 and $550 for the same job, same materials list. If you have the money up front, local marine contractors area better deal. The projected timeline for the City is expected to be 2 years. If $300 a month is more workable than being out of pocket $35K, then go for it. At least they are offering an option that makes it accessible to more residents.

Nice information from you as usual Castles. As always, the devil is in the details. ComponentRead Morespac ing and selection changes everything. As Castles says, bulkheads don't do much to keep water out. A raising water table will bring the water up from the ground no matter how high the bulkhead is built. And while water levels are rising, they have only risen three inches in the past century, so don't expect a disaster every weekend. Our infrastructure isn't the best, it's aging quickly and we have elected a gang who knows little about it and has little concern.
