Billy Dean's Cabaret Application Rejected, Car Seat Safety Inspection

A weekly look-in at news in the Town of Hempstead.

Court Upholds Zoning Board's Denial of Billy Dean's Wantagh Cabaret Application The Supreme Court of the State of New York announced Monday that it has upheld the Town of Hempstead's decision to reject North Bellmore strip club owner Billy Dean's cabaret application for a proposed Wantagh nightclub/restaurant on Sunrise Highway. Dean's suit against the town argued that the Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals should have never revoked its original June 2010 approval for cabaret usage on 3500 Sunrise Highway in Wantagh. The zoning board decided last March to schedule a rehearing of Dean's application under the name Green 2009, Inc. due to vocal opposition that mounted against the development, as well as a belief that not enough people were …

Long Beach Cyclists Call for More Bike Racks

As popularity of biking grows, residents and elected officials call for more places to park two-wheelers.

While bicycle enthusiasts gather for an exhibit of photos that highlighted the cycling population in Long Beach at the West End Library, the event last Saturday was also a platform for residents to call for more bike racks throughout the city.  “My goal was to show the diversity in the bicycle culture in Long Beach,” said photographer Anthony Messina, whose snapshots were on display. “Everyone rides bikes from a 95-year-old grandmother to a business executive to young children.” A Walks resident, Messina spoke about the connection between the struggle to find parking in town and the need for bike racks.    “Once I park my car here in Long Beach, I do not want to move it because there is a parking problem here, which encourages people to …

Business Q&A: Maritime Surf

Long Beach resident and business owner Mike Flammer discusses his plans for the summer without Quicksilver Surf Pro.

Mike Flammer, co-owner of Maritime Surf for the last four years, sat down with Patch to discuss the ins and outs of catering to Long Beach’s devout wave seekers of all skill levels. How long have you been surfing? About 17 years, so since I was pretty young. I was around 11 or 12 years old. I tried getting in the water as much as I could. It gets addicting after a while. Is there any advice you can give to people that are thinking about getting into surfing for the first time? Best advice is to really get the right equipment to start off with and that takes talking to people. We have a lot of boards for beginners here and we're really up front about what’s going to work best for people. A lot of people want to get short boards because that…

The End Nears for Carleton & Dayne

Long Beach specialty gift store will close its doors May 15.

The economy isn’t getting any better, at least not for Justine Champlin. After nearly 10 years in business, the owner of Carleton & Dayne, a specialty gift store in Long Beach, will close her doors May 15. “I’ve been trying to stay with the business and make it through the recession, waiting for it to change,” Champlin said. “It’s not changing.” Champlin bought Carleton & Dayne in 2003, after the original owner opened the shop at 252 E. Park Ave. six years earlier. Champlin said she turned it around from a shop with custom gift baskets and gourmet foods to an establishment with so much more: home decor, bath and body products, Joseph Schmidt confections and baby products. Today, though, the end is near, evidenced by the 20 to 70 percent …
