Election results to be announced Wednesday to decide winner of second seat.
Newcomer Stewart Mininsky declared himself “sort of speechless” on learning that he pulled the most votes in Long Beach's Board of Education election late Tuesday night, even though official tallies were not released to determine the winner of the second seat in the at-large election. “I’m going to try to fulfill the trust of the people that supported me and had faith in me to do the right thing for the district and the children,” Mininsky managed to tell Patch from his home, where he waited with his family for the results Tuesday. “We will see about fiscal oversight,” added Mininsky, whose campaign struck the theme that the district must do a better job of cutting expenses and reducing wasteful spending. “These are the main things that …

Voters pass school budget.
While newcomer Stewart Mininsky picked up the most votes in the Board of Education election and residents approved the school district’s $122.1 million budget, the vote totals between the two incumbent candidates, Darlene Tangney and Gina Guma, were too close to call Tuesday. District officials refused to release any further details, but stated that Mininsky did receive the most votes. The district added that they would talk to Board of Elections officials Wednesday to validate approximately 18 affidavits ballots in an effort to determine who received the second highest vote total in the at-large election. Mininsky will serve a three-year term on the board starting July 1. The budget passed by a vote of 1841 to 936, according to Newsday. …

A summary of what will be on the ballot for Tuesday's vote.
On Tuesday, Long Beach School District residents will head to the polls and cast votes on the proposed budget and for three candidates running in the Board of Education race. Here’s a breakdown on what voters will decide tomorrow: Proposed Budget Long Beach’s proposed $122.1 million spending plan for 2012-13 represents a 3.7 percent increase from the current spending plan. The approximately $3.5 million hike is to the tax levy, the amount of money to be raised through property taxes, and represents money owed on a $98 million bond to upgrade district-wide facilities that voters approved in 2009. Under a new tax cap law that only permits a 2 percent tax levy increase, exceptions are made for districts that must pay previously approved …

The Nassau County Legislator lost in 2010 to the Democratic incumbent.
Nassau County Legis. Francis Becker recently announced that he will seek a congressional bid to New York's 4th district, two years after losing to Rep. Carolyn McCarthy in 2010. Rep. McCarthy will now represent Long Beach, replacing Rep. Peter King, under recent redistricting of Long Island’s congressional lines. The Lynbrook resident still needs to gain the Republican nomination for the election - Becker will square off against Frank Scaturro, whom he defeated in 2010 for the nomination. Party primary elections are scheduled for June 26, 2012. “The overwhelming support I’ve received during the petitioning period has been tremendous. I’m extremely grateful to all my campaign volunteers, as well as each and every Committeeperson, who …

Three Judge panel approves map that will take away northern part of lawmaker's district.
Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford, will see his Congressional district change considerably under a new map that has been approved by a three-judge Federal Court panel. The judges adopted a map drawn by lower court judge Roanne Mann a week ago after state lawmakers did not come up with a redistricting plan that reflects the results of the 2010 census. "Like the census that triggers it, this argument is now raised in federal courts at predictable 10-year intervals," the judges wrote in their decision Monday, addressing the lawsuit by voters who argued that the state was doing harm to their right to participate in upcoming elections. The panel noted in past years New York has implemented a plan at the last minute to avoid having judges draw the map…

This kitty and pooch are looking for loving homes.
Christmas the cat was taken from a house that burned down on New Year's Eve in Long Beach. She was the only pet that survived the fire (two others perished) and she's looking for a new and loving home. She is about 3- to 4-years-old and incredibly affectionate and social with both animals and people. Tank is a 5-year-old Labrador/Pit Bull mix that was found tied to a tree and left with a bag of dog food. He is social with dogs, but selective; incredibly sweet and loving with people, but also very strong. He is also blind in one eye. To learn how you can adopt this pooch and kitty, contact the Long Beach/Rescue Ink Animal Shelter at 770 Park Pl., or call 516-665-9050. Democrat attorney says LBPD police "brandished and waved" firearms outside City Hall to intimidate North Park voters.
The Nassau County District Attorney's office is looking into allegations that a Long Beach detective "brandished and waved" firearms outside a polling place at City Hall last week. Ruth Bernstein, a Long Beach attorney who monitored the polling site for Democrats late on Election Day, filed a complaint with the D.A. of attempted voter intimidation based on Det. Sgt. Howard Domitz holding a long gun in each hand, which she contends was an effort to drive away voters from the North Park community, a mostly Democrat neighborhood, according to a Newsday article. Said Bernstein: "The guns were clearly a huge political intimidation of people coming in to vote in this heavily minority area of North Park." But City Manager Charles Theofan said the…

Long Beach constituents share what motivated them to cast their ballots.
As Long Beach residents hit the polls Tuesday to vote in the City Council and County Legislator elections, a common theme among some who cast their ballots at East School was the desire for some kind of change, if not on certain issues, then among the city's political leadership. The Rosensweigs, a couple that lives on Shore Road, were motivated by two issues: the refurbishment of the boardwalk and the Quiksilver surf competition. "The boardwalk, of course, is a big concern," Esther Rosensweig said. "We have a bench on the boardwalk and in the last year, it's been broken. I've called repeatedly and was told not to worry, it would be repaired. I was just there and it is still broken." Her husband, Ira, cast his vote with matters surrounding…
