Endangered Spaces

It looks like Duke Falcon's may be gone. I loved the place, mostly because of the "kitsch" and the tall tale about Duke Falcon, who stole the heart of the owner's mother. Not to mention the food was good, the menu was crazy, and the prices were reasonable. The way the place is still unchanged gives me some hope that the "for lease" sign may not be the final decision. It was a truly unique owner-run place, just like the good old days. And cooler than any pretend "trendy" place could be.

In any case, I thought maybe we could start identifying local businesses or sites that may be "endangered" on our barrier island.

One place I wonder about is the old pizza place right at the end of the boardwalk at NY Ave. I actually liked it better when they expanded with the tiny deck and tried to add a little class to the place. It was the last eatery where you could literally sip a drink on the beach. The food was sure lousy, but it was worth it to just be there. For all I know, the place and the "pink motel" could have been knocked down since the last time I went by there.

I'm thinking, maybe if folks write in and post on our  "Endangered Spaces" list, we could make sure to throw a little more business their way to help keep them around. It's a shame when places shut down so unexpecedly, especially after coming back from Sandy. And I'm thinking not just about businesses, but things slip away without a chance for us to speak out- like the tiny park at Nevada and Beech where they paved over the flowers before anyone realized it. Any places on your list? Or any updates on the places I just mentioned?
