#69 - Watch Quiksilver Surf Contest as Hurricane Passes By

Four competition days scheduled for this week to take advantage of swells storm is expected to produce.

It's been in the making for years. It's been the talk of the town for months. And now, the Quiksilver Pro New York surfing competition hits the waves of Long Beach, giving surfing enthusiasts a chance to watch some of the world’s best surfers up close, and making #69 of Patch's 100 Things To Do In Long Beach an historic marker.

Quiksilver's sixth stop on the ASP World Championship Tour is the first ever on the East Coast of the United States, and surfers will compete for an unprecedented $1 million prize.

And though city officials and Quiksilver organizers agreed to cancel the festival portion of the event , which included national headline bands, in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the surfing component will go on starting Tuesday.

"Given the distraction wrought by Hurricane Irene, we were unsure if the event could even proceed, but working closely with Long Beach officials over the past few days, we're excited to be able to report the event will move forward, although we've had to adjust the format due to the impact of the storm," Quiksilver CEO Bob McKnight said.

Quiksilver released a statement on Labor Day that said the four days of competition will now be held in succession this week, rather than over an 11-day window, to take advantage of swells that Hurricane Katia is expected to produce while rumbling up the Atlantic: “With a solid surf line forecast in hand, organizers anticipate an 8 a.m. start tomorrow [Sept. 6] with competition running four consecutive days to a Friday climax, when waves are expected to peak at eight feet.”

The surfing competition and activities are on National Boulevard, outside the Allegria Hotel. Start times may vary, so log on to Quiksilver's site for up-to-the-minute information and schedules.
