The section from west of Laurelton Boulevard to east of Lafayette Boulevard was opened Friday, the city announced on its website Friday afternoon. The announcement continued:

"This is an event that residents of our great City will see throughout the summer and fall, as sections of the boardwalk are finished and released back to the City from Grace Industries. We invite all of our residents to enjoy the now almost mile-long boardwalk."

The first section of the reconstructed boardwalk, a four-block area from Long Beach to west of Magnolia Boulevard, was opened in late July. Grace Industries, the Plainview firm hired to rebuild the 2.2-mile boardwalk, is contracted to complete the entire structure in November, at a cost of $44.2 million. The city released the latest two-week work schedule on Monday.
