The City of Long Beach issued the following update on the snow storm during the late 8 a.m. hour Friday:

Friday Morning Update:

The City's workforce has continued with snow removal operations throughout the night and into this morning. Operations will continue as snow is still falling. High winds are the great challenge - as snow is plowed in some areas, it blows right back, making roads slippery.

This morning's main focus is for commuters, making Park Ave, Broadway, West Beech and the LIRR parking area as safe as possible. The City's snow emergency remains in effect. If you have to go out, take your time and help your neighbors.

Sanitation pickup will go forward as planned this morning. City Hall and the Rec Center are open, bus service open and running, but Friday's Child Care and Holiday Care programs have been canceled.

LIRR Weekend Schedule

The Long Island Rail Road is running on a weekend schedule, including in Long Beach.

Long Beach Bridge Open

Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford posted the following announcement about the Long Beach Bridge on her Facebook page:

"As we prepare for the storm, I want to assure our residents that Nassau County DPW is monitoring the Michael Valenti Long Beach Bridge to make sure that it remains passable for all vehicles, especially our emergency vehicles," County Legislator Denise Ford said on Facebook. "The Long Beach barrier island is still without an emergency room and we need to make sure that the bridge is open to all vehicles. I urge all residents to listen to our governor and county executive and stay home if possible."

Long Beach Library

Due to the storm, the Long Beach Library will open at 11 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Friday, according to the library's website.

Child Care Programs Cancelled
All Child Care and Holiday Care programs are cancelled for today, Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 due to the winter storm. All Magnolia Senior Center Programs are cancelled as well. Please stay home and stay safe!

LBHS Team Practices Cancelled

All Long Beach High School athletic team practices scheduled for Friday have been canceled due to the snow storm, according to school district’s website.

City employees doing a great job! But there's only about 7" of snow out there!

Yeah, it was great to see how folks avoided panic and turned this into an almost-pleasant day. My neighbors really cooperated and got the sidewalks cleared for the folks who couldn't quite do it. And it seems that most of us learned to be "permanently prepared" for mother nature- we already had the flashlights, bottled water, etc on hand. One of my neighbors said "we had a great teacher." I know the emergency call system is a great thing, but it was odd Schnirman telling everybody the streets were cleared but stay home, then announcing that the Rec is open.
