The City of Long Beach declared a snow emergency at 5 p.m. Thursday and posted an update on storm activity in the city for Thursday evening and Friday morning:

Friday Morning Update:

All Child Care and Holiday Care programs are cancelled for today, Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 due to the winter storm. All Magnolia Senior Center Programs are cancelled as well. Please stay home and stay safe!

Thursday Evening Update:

The City's full complement of snow vehicles will be out this evening — please stay off the roads if possible. If you lose power, please contact the PSE&G emergency line at 1-800-490-0075. As always, in the event of an emergency, please call 911.

The City of Long Beach and Nassau County are coordinating closely regarding this evening's storm. Please be assured that the Long Beach Bridge will remain open and safe this evening.

LIRR Weekend Schedule

The Long Island Rail Road is running on a weekend schedule, including in Long Beach.

Long Beach Bridge Open

Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford posted the following announcement about the Long Beach Bridge on her Facebook page:

"As we prepare for the storm, I want to assure our residents that Nassau County DPW is monitoring the Michael Valenti Long Beach Bridge to make sure that it remains passable for all vehicles, especially our emergency vehicles," County Legislator Denise Ford said on Facebook. "The Long Beach barrier island is still without an emergency room and we need to make sure that the bridge is open to all vehicles. I urge all residents to listen to our governor and county executive and stay home if possible."

Long Beach Library

Due to the storm, the Long Beach Library will open at 11 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Friday, according to the library's website.

Driving around town at 7:30 am, found about 7" of dusty blowing snow. Some deeper drifts. The City workers did a great job plowing the streets and driving is pretty slippery but no problem if you're careful. Really not enough snow to snow your car into its parking space, so you should be able to clean it off and drive right out. Visibility isn't a problem but blowing snow hurts your face. The LIRR is running all its trains but only accepting riders on a weekend schedule. Enjoy the snow. It's a beautiful day.
