Get Out: Polar Bears Splash, Snowflake Race, LGBT Night and Billiards

Patch lets you know about local happenings this weekend.

Let's see, the weekend is near and you don’t have plans yet. What to do? Check out Patch's new Thursday feature Get Out to find out what’s going on in Long Beach and neighboring towns. This weekend there’s more to do than just watch the Super Bowl. Here’s what’s happening on Saturday and Sunday:

1. It’s that time of year when thousands of people descend on the city’s sands and plunge into the freezing Atlantic at the annual Long Beach Polar Bears Super Bowl Splash on Sunday. The festivities for this Make-A-Wish fundraiser start around 12:30 p.m. Tomorrow, Patch will feature a story on the Long Beach Polar Bear Clus, so make sure you come back here on Friday.

2. Need to warm up and fill your stomach after you’ve taken the ocean plunge on Sunday? Lola’s Kitchen & Wine Bar will host a charity brunch with a chef carving station. The cost is $20 for adults, $10 for children. 100 percent of the proceeds from the buffet will be donated to the Long Beach Polar Bear Club / Make-A-Wish Foundation.

3. Runners will fill the city streets on Saturday for the annual 4-Mile Snowflake Race starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Long Beach Catholic Regional School at West Broadway and New York Avenue. Due to icy conditions on the boardwalk, the race will be held on Broadway.

4.
Wrestling fans can watch the Nassau County Qualifier Wrestling Meet at Long Beach High School starting at 9:30 a.m Saturday. Long Beach, East Meadow, Bellmore, Lynbrook and other high schools will compete. Admission is $6.

5. The Hub Billiard Club, at 4060 Austin Blvd. in Island Park, will host a LGBT Night, described as “celebrating our loyal customers in the gay community,” starting at 10 p.m. on Saturday. This new facility sports 16 pool tables, and the party will include a DJ spinning dance tunes and all-night drink specials. There is no cover.
