Nickerson to Open Friday for 2013 Season

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced that Nickerson Beach Park will officially open for the 2013 Summer Season beginning this Friday, May 24, marking the first time that Nickerson Beach will be open to the public since Superstorm Sandy.

When Superstorm Sandy struck the east coast in late October, Nassau County suffered extensive damage to roads, landscaping and infrastructure, while the County’s only beach, Nickerson Beach, suffered from significant dune and beach erosion. After the storm, debris collected from the City of Long Beach had been temporarily staged in the parking lot of Nickerson Beach, an approved Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Transfer Station, before being removed by barge to upstate landfills.

“Since the storm, Nassau County has made substantial progress towards restoring all areas of the County as well as Nickerson Beach’s beautiful beachfront,” said County Executive Mangano.  “The County parks and beaches are vital to the economic and recreational well-being of our community as people come from all over to enjoy everything that Nassau County has to offer.  With the support from our residents, local, state and elected federal officials, as well as countless community organizations and private companies, I am proud to say that Nickerson Beach will re-open to the public this Friday, May 24 just in time for Memorial Day Weekend.”

Repairs and improvements that have been made at Nickerson Beach since the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy include the repair of the pool, hot water heaters and damaged sidewalks, new mobi mats to replace the old wooden walkways, cabanas have been painted, new artwork has been put up to differentiate each row of cabanas, and a new concession has been constructed.  Additionally, due to the large surge impact on the dunes, Nickerson Beach has been included into the City of Long Beach dune replenishment project and new snow fencing has been put around the dunes.

The cabana areas will be open on weekends only beginning Friday, May 24 through Friday, June 14 from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.  Beginning Saturday, June 15 through Sunday, Sept. 8 the cabana areas will be open daily from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Lifeguards will be on duty only on weekends from Saturday, May 25 through Sunday, June 16 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.  Beginning Monday, June 17 through Monday, Sept. 2 lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Beginning Saturday, June 15 the pool at Nickerson Beach will be open from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. on weekends.  The pool will close for the season on Monday, Sept. 2.
