Photos: Boardwalk Meets the Wrecking Ball

Following a goodbye ceremony for the Long Beach boardwalk Saturday, demolition crews started to tear apart the 2.2-mile wooden walkway, working from the western end of the structure at New York Avenue and Grand Boulevard. Patch took some snapshots of the demo at sunset Tuesday. Feel free to upload some of your own photos of the project that city officials expect will take about a month to complete.

Can you describe want happens to the shredded boardwalk after it's removed? I understand it goes to a transfer station in Farmingdale, then what?

Any news on the replacement material for the new boardwalk?

How sad.

I hope it is not just replaced with wood again, but with other material options that won't splinter or warp and can withstand another "Sandy" if it has to.
