City Seeks to Slow Down the Town

Council to vote on speed reduction proposal Tuesday.

Some speed limit signs in the City of Long Beach may soon be replaced.

Long Beach Boulevard north of East Park Avenue is the only boulevard sporting a speed limit as high as 35 mph, and the same speed limit exists on East Park between Long Beach and Maple boulevards. Both stretches of road are under Nassau County’s jurisdiction, and city officials look to ask the county to lower the speed limit on them to 30 mph, in order to conform to the maximum speed limit across city streets.

First, though, the City Council must vote on a resolution proposing to reduce the speed limit to 30 mph on these streets at Tuesday’s regular meeting at City Hall. While City Manager Jack Schnirman believes the reduced speed limit would help slow down traffic citywide, others, such as Councilman John McLaughlin, remain unconvinced that this would deter speedy motorists, according to Newsday.
