Starting at 1:30 p.m. at Civic Beach, between Freeport Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, Schumer will call on the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Army Corps of Engineers to move forward with a plan approved by the City Council last week that would allow design and construction of the Long Beach shore protection project to begin immediately, according to a press relase from the senator’s office.

The press release continues:

“Schumer will warn that any requirement that the Army Corps hold off on construction of this project until a two-year long east-coast-wide study is completed would be near sighted. Rather, Schumer will suggest a two-pronged approach that would allow the Army Corps to build the currently designed project in the short-term at the same time that long-term resiliency and mitigation strategies are studied.

“Earlier this month, Schumer announced that, after his push, the Long Beach protection project would be fully funded by the federal government and is estimated to cost approximately $150 million. Schumer will meet with community leaders and local officials at Point Lookout and push OMB and the Army Corps to begin construction and planning of the Long Beach protection project immediately so the affected communities are not left vulnerable to future storms.”

The senator on Sunday will be joined by  Sunday Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Nassau County Leg. Denise Ford, members of the Long Beach City Council, City Manager Jack Schnirman, as well as various civic associations and other groups.
