Business Q&A: Doris The Florist

Local flower shop changed locations but offers same service.

With the busiest day for floral arrangements less than a week away, Long Beach and surrounding communities can count on Doris Gralitzer, owner of Doris the Florist in Island Park, for artistry and tasteful recommendations on Valentine's Day. Here, Gralitzer describes what it was like to relocate her business from one part of town (her business was then named Creative Florist) to 233 Long Beach Rd.

Why did you recently move to a new location?

I was at the last location for five years. I needed to move to a bigger and better location. I opened on Jan. 1, 2012.

What is your most popular bouquet and why?

The most popular is a dozen roses. I always like to talk guys in to tropical flowers. They are unusual and long-lasting kind of flowers. I love to mix bouquets of tropical and Dutch flowers. If you’ve been married for a few years, women tend to get tired of a dozen roses.

When is your busiest time of year?

It would be Valentine’s Day for my busiest single day. The months of May and June are wedding season and by far her busiest time of year.

How much business do you get from Long Beach?

My store is located just over the bridge, right near Pop’s Liquor, so I definitely get a lot of the Long Beach business. I also recieve a lot of business for occasions at the Allegria Hotel in Long Beach.
