Plans are afoot for two large street fairs at the vacant beachfront Superblock property, between Riverside and Long Beach boulevards at East Broadway, on July 20-21 and Sept. 7-8.

The Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Nassau County Craft Shows, which organizes similar events at Eisenhower Park and Garden City, will produce the fairs designed to attract visitors to the beach town and assist local business still struggling after Hurricane Sandy in October, according to theLong Beach Herald.

Chamber Executive Vice President Mark Tannenbaum said the fairs will feature a larger variety of food and retail vendors than that two arts and crafts fairs that the Long Beach Historical Society holds on the boardwalk each summer, as well as food trucks and family-oriented activities, including a whole section of rubber rides, and live music organized by Artists in Partnership on both Saturdays. He expects to fill 150 to 200 booths ranging in price from $125 to $400, with local businesses and chamber members eligible for heavily discounted prices.

Tannenbaum — who has already secured a contract with the property managers of the Superblock, iStar Financial Management LLC, and hopes for a turnout of as many as 10,000 people — said:

“There has never been a street fair done in Long Beach. You’re going to see a lot of local merchants. You’ll see a lot of the local food establishments. Plus, we’re going to have a sampling of the different craft items that people come down for.”

Tannenbaum told Patch that only barrier island and Island Park business and food vendors will be permitted at the fairs, and, if booths are available, retail, craft fair and other businesses that don’t directly competed with local merchants will be permitted to participate.
