Key Food Opens in West End

Supermarket to feature free delivery service for seniors.

West End residents once again have a supermarket within walking distance of their homes.

A Key Food store now occupies the former C-Town building, at 1080 W. Beech St., having opened its doors the Friday before Memorial Day, just in time for summer, store manager Bob Hassen told Patch on Tuesday.

"People have been real supportive and are very happy there is a store where they can walk to again," he said.

The 6,000-square-foot store features dairy, meat, produce and deli departments, and a free home delivery service for seniors will commence later this week, Hassen said. Weekly sales start each Friday.

Hassen noted that the supermarket is trying to incorporate some products that are made in Long Beach, including bagels and mozzarella cheese that are made and sold by local businesses.

“We’re really trying to be big on community,” Hassen said.

One Long Beach-oriented feature of the new store is the vintage black-and-white photos of the beach town from yesteryear that adorn the walls above the produce and dairy cases.

After Hurricane Sandy last October, the Koff family in Long Beach that owned the former C-Town for 43 years and decided to close the store, after it sustained heavy damages in the storm. In January, Key Food signed a deal to purchase the store for an undisclosed amount. Another Key Food, under a different owner, replaced the Associated supermarket in the East End earlier this year.
