April 14: Bible Study, Free Blood Pressure Screening, Current Events Talk

Get the scoop on what's happening each weekday in Long Beach.

Rise and shine, Long Beach. Here are five things you should know before starting your Thursday:

1. When is the last time you read Genesis, Leviticus or Deuteronomy?  Get reacquainted with the Good Book when a Bible study group meets and has dinner at the St. James of Jerusalem Episcopal Church on West Penn Street every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

2. While Long Beach baseball hosts Calhoun at 4:30 p.m. at the high school, Long Beach girls' lacrosse takes on Hicksville at the middle school starting at the same time.

3. Have your blood pressure taken for free at the Long Beach Library from 12 to 2 p.m. Staff from the Long Beach Medical Center will be waiting for you.

4. What do you think of the political impact of the Tea Party, President Obama's handling of the civil war in Libya, the aftermath of the quake and tsunami in Japan? Join fellow residents who discuss current events at the library at 2 p.m.

5. Later today on Patch: Friends of the Long Beach Public Library held a fundraiser for the library at the Allegria Hotel Tuesday evening. We’ll have a video report on the organization and event. Also, it’s been nearly two years since a fire wiped out several stores on East Park Avenue. We’ll have a feature story on some of the stores that moved into the new storefronts there. And in case you missed it yesterday, we posted a story on commercial vacancies in the city.
