Plans are underway to rebuild a smarter beach on Long Island's South Shore.

Approximately six miles west of Long Beach in Rockaway, New York City officials have announced that new "beach hubs" will be built along the Queens community's beach.

According to the Daily News:

The new landscape includes modernistic comfort stations, raised high off the sand to ward off future damage from raging storm waters.

The new look Rockaway beaches will include revamped "bathrooms, lifeguard facilities and concession areas," according to the same report.

The report states that work will begin on the new structures this summer.

What do they plan on doing with the housing projects that have caused more death and destruction in Rockaway?

Move them to the super block.

Will LB take advantage of this once in lifetime opportunity to build a replacement with someplace to get food, a drink, a shower, lavatories, lifeguard facilities, etc. ? TILB.But hope springs eternal.

has anyone noticed how filthy the sand and beach is?
Me February 26, 2013 at 09:21 AM
Other than spots where there was zero dune and they patched it up right after the storm wiothout sifting the sand I thought the beach, at least in WE, was pretty clean. It usually seems a little "dirtier" in winter as its not being raked every day like summer but other than spots where sand was dumped in the first few days after Sandy it doesn't seem too bad to me.

I walk the beach and there is a lot of debris, tons of broken glass on the dunes, shards of broken wood and glass going in and out of the beach "entrances", tons of garbage, and dog crap as people are not cleaning up after their dogs, which causes the highest bacteria in the ocean. it is in my opinion a filthy mess, and I wonder how they are going to "clean" the beach...tons of small pieces of glass up and down the "dunes

Will these beach hubs become hangouts for bums/crackheads and derelicts?

Here's a proposition: The next time that we are walking around this great city of ours, post Sandy, pick up some of the light debris that is still around. I have also noticed the glass and other remnants on the beach and this is to be expected. Those sifting machines were not designed to catch every small piece of glass. The City should organize many 'clean the beach" days before the summer comes. It's going to take a village to clean the beach.

I think it would be wonderful to have cold showers and bathroom facitlites on the West end .Especially since the one down by Tennessee is gone .if we have to use the facilities we have to go home .i
