FEMA Deadline Approaches, TV Show Films in Nassau

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.

Nassau County officials are reminding residents who are still reeling from the impact of Hurricane Sandy that the Jan. 28 filing deadline for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) applications is just around the corner.

Applications can be completed online at fema@service.govdelivery.com or in person at one of the 18 Disaster Recovery Centers throughout the New York region that will remain open until further notice. These one-stop shops provide face-to-face assistance for homeowners, renters, business owners and eligible survivors as expeditiously as possible. Translation services are available for those who do not speak English.

To qualify for assistance, individual or household losses must have occurred in an area covered by the Presidential Disaster Declaration for New York, which includes Nassau in addition to 12 other counties. They must register with FEMA at fema@service.govdelivery.com. If you experience problems registering, please email support@govdelivery.com for assistance.

In addition, the deadline for Hurricane Sandy survivors to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is Feb. 4. Workers can register for DUA by calling: 1-888-209-8124; out of state residents: 1-877-358-5306; or visit http://www.labor.ny.gov/ui/2012-sandy-services.shtm.

All of these services are provided by FEMA at no charge.

I'm still not sure what all this means to the residents of Long Beach.
We are still misplaced can not go back to our homes and it seems that it is more important to make things nicer for the visitors this summer. What's that all about?

What about the ASPESTOS tiles that are falling into our sand from boardwalk demo. Check it out go to the beach and on top of cement pilings are broken ASPESTOS tiles that were once used as spacers. They are falling into the sand and will be spread and crushed even further into lb sand

Long Beach Boulevard ramp is done too. You could drive a fire truck on it. Hope they fill in theRead More countersunk screw holes, otherwise they will fill with water and rot the wood. NYC learned that in Coney Island and Rockaway.

While I agree there seem to be problems in the LB school district, I'm not sure this takes intoRead More account the financial reasons for opting for NCCC. For many families finances, not academic performance dictates the college. I think a more meaningful number would be the percentage of graduating seniors attending ANY college.

Bottom line re: LIRR is that people in suburbs who ride LIRR and Metro North are paying to subsidizeRead More the bankrupt NYC Subways and subsidize minority riders in the outer boros. Its the price we pay to not live in NYC. The subways charges a cheap fixed fare to subsidize low income NYC residents. Its a form of socialism.
