June 17: Fun Day at East School, Thunderstorms Coming, Movie Times

Get the scoop on what's happening each weekday in Long Beach.

As the work week draws to a close we’ve got some events and activities we think you might like to know about:

1. So you've got plans to hit the beach? Mother Nature has other plans for you. Her spring rains continue as forecasters predict scattered thunderstorms through the day and a high in the mid-70s.

2. But you can always find shelter at the movies. Long Beach Cinema reopened last weekend. Here's a list of movies showing today: Green Lantern 3D  (PG-13) 3, 5:45, 8:30 p.m.; Mr. Popper's Penguins (PG) 11:45 a.m., 2, 4:15, 6:30, 8:40 p.m.; Kung Fu Panda 2 (PG) 1, 3:15, 5:30, 8 p.m.; Super 8 (PG-13) 12:30, 3:30, 6, 8:50 p.m.

4. Today is the last weekday when the beach in Long Beach, also known as Ocean Beach Park, is without lifeguards on duty. Starting Saturday, lifeguards are on duty seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day. Enjoy your summer at the beach and remember to keep safe when swimming in the ocean!

6. Later today on Patch: We'll start a new feature that lists garage sales in Long Beach, and we'll post a story on some local dads who talk about how fatherhood has changed their lives. Be sure to return before you start your weekend.
