Long Beach and Quiksilver Prepare for Hurricane Irene

While city workers built mounds of sand, the surfing company deconstructed its staging areas on the beach as the storm approaches.

The City of Long Beach and Quiksilver, the company holding the Pro New York surfing competition in the beach town next week, were busy Thursday and Friday making preparations for Hurricane Irene.

The storm is expected to hit Long Island late Saturday and into Sunday. The beach in Long Beach, known as Ocean Beach Park, will be closed throughout the weekend, and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano has mandated that Long Beach residents evacuate the city by 5 p.m. Saturday.
