Long Beach and Quiksilver Prepare for Hurricane Irene

While city workers built mounds of sand, the surfing company deconstructed its staging areas on the beach as the storm approaches.

The City of Long Beach and Quiksilver, the company holding the Pro New York surfing competition in the beach town next week, were busy Thursday and Friday making preparations for Hurricane Irene.

The storm is expected to hit Long Island late Saturday and into Sunday. The beach in Long Beach, known as Ocean Beach Park, will be closed throughout the weekend, and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano has mandated that Long Beach residents evacuate the city by 5 p.m. Saturday.

No, My brother and I both heard the same thing, I just checked with him. We heard what we heard from Eyewitness News. The Quicksilver Website doesn't say anything, but they probably don't know what they're doing yet. I have no care if it's cancelled or not. Mostly I'm concerned with everyone's safety at this point. There are videos on youtube which are mind blowing. (This is around the area where the Quicksilver Competition will hypothetically be held):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajTC2ByWOLg

The canal bulkhead issue works like this. Storm comes and damages some things. Bulkheads are heightened and people scream. People develop disaster amnesia and go back to what they are acustomed to think and envision.. Short-sighted thinking with a rising water table is a recipe for more heart ache. Get used to it!
