Long Beach Boardwalk Opens

This story was first published at 9 a.m. On July 27.

Bikers, joggers, walkers and beach-goers are taking to the new Brazilian hardwood boardwalk in Long Beach on Saturday morning, after city officials on Friday announced that a four-block section of the 2.2-mile structure was safe and ready to open.

The officials made the announcement at a press conference at National boardwalk, in the shadows of the Allegria Hotel, and Sen. Charles Schumer vowed that he would work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to reimburse the city 100 percent for the cost of the $44.2 million rebuilding project in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
