Long Beach Goes Festive as Quiksilver Contest Kicks Off

The city was busy with a surf competition in the midst of Labor Day weekend.

DJs spun vinyl, surfers signed autographs, volleyball players made kill shots, make-up artists beautifyed ladies, barbeque chefs were cooking, bands were belting out tunes from the beach to Kennedy Plaza, as crowds filled the beach, boardwalk and Park Avenue Sunday. In other words, the Quiksilver Pro New York surfing competition started in the midst of Labor Day weekend, and the event's site on National Boulevard and surrounding areas were hoping. Patch photographers were there to capture some of the many happenings.

Are there bands playing ? I was under the impression that all the bands, etc, were canceled.

Local bands in the shell near LB road and Riverside on the board walk and probably in local bars and restaurants but none of the bigger name bands that were to be a part of the festival.

Yeah. Springsteen cancelled out due to a flood in the basement of his Asbury Park beach house. He's washed up anyway.

As a resident I have mixed feelings about this event. So far my wife and son were almost hit on the bicycles, my daughter and I were almost run down on ours and our neighbor was almost hit walking her dog. I don't know if this is due to the contest but it seems people have lost some common sense. Festively speaking from what I see so far three people are making a lot of money, Quicksilver in the monster merchandise tent, the Alegria with over priced drinks and food and Dover Caterers with unfreindly employees. I hope the merchants like Unsound, LB Surf, the restaurants and others enjoy in the money flow. Its great seeing the surfers and I feel in spite of their QS handlers they are very friendly toward the crowds.

Tom, Who are Dover Caterers? What are they doing down on Charlies Surf Beach?

Hey Tom. Lots of "almosts", for you and your entire family and neighbor this week. Maybe its a good time for you all to pack up and head to Vegas for the week. You might get lucky there too.
