The honor comes on the heels of the Seawolves' best season in program history, during which it went 10-3, defeated a Football Bowl Subdivision team for the first time, and was nationally ranked by the FCS Coaches and Sports Network polls for much of the season. The Seawolves, who tied for the Big South conference championship this year, were eliminated in the second round of the FCS playoffs Saturday by Montana State.

Priore, who was the starting fullback for three seasons at the University of Albany, was named Big South Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011. He is in his seventh year as head coach at Stony Brook, and owns a 47-33 record at Stony Brook and 86-42 overall record as a collegiate head coach.

He is no stranger to the AFCA; he was named Division III Region I Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005, his final two years at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., where his team won 30 consecutive games. Priore shares the AFCA honor with Brian Jenkins of Bethune-Cookman, who led his team to a 9-3 finish.
