According to the New York Post, the officer, a member of the Emergency Services Unit, was shot and killed near the parkway and Jamaica Avenue in the vicinity of the Belmont Racetrack.
"One suspect was believed to be shot by police and the other was still on the run."
A law enforcement official told the Wall Street Journal that "the officer had pulled a car over at about 11:10 a.m. at the entrance ramp to the parkway at 241st Street and Jamaica Avenue."
Multiple reports have stated that the wounded cop was airlifted to North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting comes less than one week after Nassau County Highway Patrol officer Joseph P. Olivieri was struck and killed while investigating a motor vehicle accident on the Long Island Expressway. He was laid to rest Monday.
The officer's name has not yet been released, pending family notification.
According to the New York State Department of Transportation, the shooting closed the Cross Island Parkway both north and southbound near Jamaica Avenue. RELATED:

This young man was killed in the line of duty - doing his job. From what the news said in interviews of his neighbors he was the kind of neighbor we'd all want to have, friendly and helpful. May God take care of him now and may his parents find peace. Let us also not forget the innocent victim. To the family of the person who was senselessly killed for his car, my sympathies. As to the piece of garbage that did this, if there is any justice in the world, you will suffer long and hard.
Lets start by asking the PC if Nassau Cops are required to wear their bullet resistant vest while on patrol. It appears that this officer was not. That does not make it his fault that this scum shot him, but it is a valid question.
In this sad case, the hero officer observed a crime and took action.
I suppose you feel it was not the offices responsibility to stop this scumbag while traveling on his rims w/o rubber??
