Nassau Police Officer Fatally Shot

Shooting marks second death for the department in less than one week.

A Nassau County police officer was fatally shot near the Cross Island Parkway in Bellerose Terrace Tuesday morning.

According to the New York Post, the officer, a member of the Emergency Services Unit, was shot and killed near the parkway and Jamaica Avenue in the vicinity of the Belmont Racetrack.

"One suspect was believed to be shot by police and the other was still on the run."

A law enforcement official told the Wall Street Journal that "the officer had pulled a car over at about 11:10 a.m. at the entrance ramp to the parkway at 241st Street and Jamaica Avenue."

Multiple reports have stated that the wounded cop was airlifted to North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting comes less than one week after Nassau County Highway Patrol officer Joseph P. Olivieri was struck and killed while investigating a motor vehicle accident on the Long Island Expressway. He was laid to rest Monday.

The officer's name has not yet been released, pending family notification.

According to the New York State Department of Transportation, the shooting closed the Cross Island Parkway both north and southbound near Jamaica Avenue. RELATED: This is a breaking news story. Patch will provide more details when they are made available.

Let's see....A black male with a sweatshirt, probably hooded I would guess. Gee...Your right Brent, I don't think that Sharpie Sharpton will be holding any press conferences anytime soon.

My prayers and sympathies to Police Officer Lopez' family - leave the moronic comments unsaid - let them rattle around in your pea brains where they belong.
This young man was killed in the line of duty - doing his job. From what the news said in interviews of his neighbors he was the kind of neighbor we'd all want to have, friendly and helpful. May God take care of him now and may his parents find peace. Let us also not forget the innocent victim. To the family of the person who was senselessly killed for his car, my sympathies. As to the piece of garbage that did this, if there is any justice in the world, you will suffer long and hard.
Joanne P October 23, 2012 at 11:31 pm
I am appalled by some of the retarded comments being blogged regarding Officer Lopez' death. How friggin insensitive can some of you people be? A 29 yr old loses his life to some psycho bastard who has no life and instead of everyone being supportive you get into political B.S.? My heart breaks for his parents and sister and his partner.RIP A.L.
Brent M. October 23, 2012 at 11:37 pm
Suspect is CAUGHT!!! May he rot in hell!! Good Job to the Brothers and Sisters wearing the badge .. Many departments came together in unity to catch this piece of garbage!!! Two innocent people were killed!! Rest In Peace Both of you.. Your Killer is Caught ...
MAY October 23, 2012 at 11:40 pm
Awful. He made the ultimate sacrifice. May he rest in peace and may the killer who took this man away from his loved ones be taken off of this earth at the mercy of the chair. He's an animal.
MAY October 23, 2012 at 11:44 pm
John Bier you are obviously a criminal to make comments like that
MAY October 23, 2012 at 11:46 pm
Joe v you are also an idiot! This comment needs to be taken down because it is disrespectful to the officer that died. Michael where are you on that?
ann m October 24, 2012 at 12:20 am
It's true things are so different now..
Joyce Anne Marino October 24, 2012 at 12:54 am
John...John...you and Joe V seem to share a similar mentality...to quote you: ""but it was HIS choice to be a cop" explains to the readers why perhaps, you've had 'all too many encounters' with law enforcement people...at 50 and a man, it's time for you to separate yourself from the negative profile you display...occupational choices DO NOT DENOTE death sentences! Take a deep breath, exhale your anger, expand and grow!
MGS October 24, 2012 at 12:54 am
What makes you think the police officers in the 3rd precinct make more money than any other police officer??? Are you talking about overtime??
S.M. October 24, 2012 at 12:59 am
To Joe V. and John Bier...you both should attend the funeral for P.O. Lopez. Maybe seeing thousands of "jack booted thugs," as you so eloquently put it, standing at attention and saluting a fallen comrade will enlighten you both. We don't hide behind our shields, we do our jobs. You're miserable people.

CATHY.R. OFFICER LOPEZ WAS A NEIGHBOR TO ME. KIND & FRIENDLY & CARING TO ALL HIS NEIGHBORS. TOO YOUNG. HE WILL BE MISSED. RIP AND MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY.

In every incident those who are left behind are required to look and see what happened. What went wrong and how we can learn from it so it does not happen again.
Lets start by asking the PC if Nassau Cops are required to wear their bullet resistant vest while on patrol. It appears that this officer was not. That does not make it his fault that this scum shot him, but it is a valid question.
Dave Kloven October 24, 2012 at 01:34 am
Nypd rates? Give me a break... The nypd is under paid... Cops put their lives on the line EVERY day ! ... Go tell PO Oliveiri, Califano, Lopez and Breitkopts family they were over paid!
Dave Kloven October 24, 2012 at 01:37 am
Ok moron... Go roll another doobie ...
Dave Kloven October 24, 2012 at 01:45 am
How about looking into why this dirt bag was found guilty of AT&T murder and only spent 4 yrs in jail? Who was on this savages parole board? How many more people need to die at the hands of parolees? Why isn't the parole board held accountable?.... STUPID LIBS!!!!
Dave Kloven October 24, 2012 at 01:49 am
What does Gov Patterson have to say about this? He closed nys prisons, put more inmates on parole and then shortened the convicts parole terms! Downsized the nys parole division! Nice going Dave

CATHY R. TO BAD THE KILLER IS STILL ALIVE. HE DOES NOT DESERVE TO LIVE. HE KILLED OFFICER LOPEZ AND AN INNOCENT CIVILIAN. RIP AND MY PRAYS TO BOTH FAMILIES.
Simba October 24, 2012 at 08:47 am
What was is partners role ? and why wasn't the officer killed wearing a vest ?
MGS October 24, 2012 at 01:00 pm
Joe, you should get your facts straight before you comment. He was doing his job and yes sometimes that includes writing tickets. Wasn't there just a big blow up about cops not writing enough tickets?? What do you want them to do, write or not write?? I
In this sad case, the hero officer observed a crime and took action.
ann m October 24, 2012 at 02:39 pm
That was exactly what I thought, why no vest???
Jason October 24, 2012 at 02:49 pm
Sarcasm not needed here.
I suppose you feel it was not the offices responsibility to stop this scumbag while traveling on his rims w/o rubber??
Joe October 24, 2012 at 03:03 pm
I don't know police requirments, but he was a member of Emergency Services, not sure they perform the same duty as patrol officiers. In anycase a terrible loss, heaven has another hero.
John Doe October 24, 2012 at 03:43 pm
My prayers go out to the victims and their families. I'm glad they caught this piece of garbage.
ann m October 24, 2012 at 06:13 pm
MGS, just check Newsday, they had printed our the base salaries for Nassau & Suffolk police, or google it. Nassau police make almost double what NYC police make, and Suffolk makes more than nassau. Messed up, where the crime is highest the salary is the lowest.
ann m October 24, 2012 at 06:15 pm
This is base salary, the OT is different in each precinct.
Marie Smith October 25, 2012 at 11:07 pm
I couldnt agree more! we all need to stand up and let it be known that WE the public wont let this foolish disregard for our hard earned dollars slip by the political wayside. Nothing good will come to this man for his selfih actions.

While I agree there seem to be problems in the LB school district, I'm not sure this takes intoRead More account the financial reasons for opting for NCCC. Bottom line re: LIRR is that people in suburbs who ride LIRR and Metro North are paying to subsidizeRead More the bankrupt NYC Subways and subsidize minority riders in the outer boros. Its the price we pay to not live in NYC. The subways charges a cheap fixed fare to subsidize low income NYC residents. Its a form of socialism.
