Signs of Surf Competition Reappear

Quiksilver rebuilds on beach for Sept. 4 start.

National Boulevard beach on Thursday was abuzz with workers who continued to reconstruct the staging areas for the Quicksilver Pro New York surf competition that will start with trials on Sept. 4.

Quiksilver’s crates and pallets of boxes lined the boardwalk, and workers unloaded the materials into the merchandise station that was reconstructed nearer to National Boulevard beach, further west from where it was originally built across from the Foundation Block on Edwards Boulevard.

The Roxy Village, a fashion station that was first built on the Foundation Block, was reconstructed near the area where the competition will be held on National beach. And except for portable restrooms that are lined up there, the Foundation Block was mostly cleared on Thursday. That site and the neighboring Superblock were to stage the festival of music, motocross and skateboard events that the city and Quiksilver agreed to cancel in the wake of Hurricane Irene. Quiksilver dissassmbled its staging areas before the storm arrived.

Meanwhile, the Athlete Zone was rebuilt at its original spot on the beach where the competition will be held, along with a smaller judges’ station, just west of the lifeguard station on National beach.
