VIDEO: LB Ready for Sunday's Polar Plunge

Long Beach residents are gearing up for what could be the largest Super Bowl Sunday Splash ever in the city's history.

In an effort to get psyched up for this year's Super Bowl Splash, Ronnie Brescio posted this video on his YouTube account. (Note: An explicit phrase is in the video)

This year's plunge is set to take place Sunday in the area between Grand Avenue and Lindell Boulevard.

Just wondering if any of you Polar Bears are considering the 53 million gallons of raw untreated sewage dumped in reynolds channel after Sandy. Did that go away. Please let me know cause I've been out of the water since then. Cold water is one thing but fecal matter is a whole other story.

the Jameson will kill the germs

IMHO, you can stop being a p**** and jump in the ocean for 20 seconds. Were not swimming in the bay the day after the storm. The sewage failure was over 150 tides ago. Theres a whole lot more water and flushing in the ocean than in the bay. And the Jameson will kill the germs.

150 tides ago? This is a current problem. Maybe take a walk on our pristine shore one day a see all the goodies that wash up lately. Its sad. http://liherald.com/eastrockaway/stories/South-Shore-bays-are-polluted,45751. I guess I'm being an educated p****. When you wake up next week and you're sick you'll figure it was the cold weather made you that way. I'm not stopping you from having fun. Its not everyday we get to jump into the sewer for 20 seconds and God help us if theres a west wind that day. That's when it's usually the worst, Jamaica Bay and Reynolds Channel.

i guess we can put you down as "will not be attending" then?

No! Quite the contrary. I totally support the cause and there's nothing we can do about the condition of the water. That's what's sad. I personally won't be going in the water this year, as I have done in the past, because of this. And just for the record the Jameson doesn't kill any germs. It weakens the immune system and makes you more vulnerable. Ask any doctor.

I think you have some legitimate concerns about our water quality kiteboarder. However, I will be jumping in anyway as I have done for years. The splash is at Grand Beach, not at the Bay Park outfall or in Jamaica Bay. As you get further away from a source, concentration will drop. Also the ocean causes significant dilution. I know the water is not as clean as it was before Sandy but my own personal view is that a quick splash is probably not that big of an exposure risk. I am going to be more worried about debris and frozen rain.

I am in the early stages of starting up the Gowanus Canal Polar Bear Club Super Bowl Plunge. All interested respond here. Webbed feet and finned backs are a plus...proceeds go to resurrection of Chauncey's.
