Vigil Set This Evening For Daniel Bobis

Locals will come together to hope for safe return of the lifelong Long Beach resident.

Family, friends and well-wishers will gather tonight at 8 p.m. at the Laurelton Boulevard Boardwalk to hope for the safe return of surfer, teacher and local Long Beach resident Daniel Bobis.

Bobis, 32, a beloved advisor and teacher at Long Beach High School, went missing while surfing off the coast in southern Sumatra, located in Indonesia, early Sunday. Bobis’ surfboard has been found, but there haven't been any signs of him. He was spending the summer traveling with his wife, Rachel, throughout Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

“We just really want to show support for his family and his wife,” said Christopher Fry, one of Bobis’ close friends, about the candlelight vigil. “Just come together to pray for him and hope that we have his return soon.”

Fry said that the local community in Sumatra has been “coming together to help.”

“They either have already or are working on getting divers out - as far as I know,” he added.

Fellow teacher Jay Spitz explained that the local United States Consulate in that region of Indonesia has been no help thus far.

According to a press release for the candlelight vigil, “friends and relatives are hoping that increased media attention will lead to ramped-up search and rescue efforts in these crucial hours.”

Fry also explained that they are looking at renting a helicopter in the area where Bobis went missing to aid in the search. In order to fund this expense, a Paypal account has been set up for donations.

“It will go to trying to get a helicopter and supporting anyone else involved in the search,” he added.

Those who wish to donate can go to Paypal.com and give money to “DannyBobisFund@Gmail.com." All donations will go directly towards Bobis' family.
