Police Investigate Threat at Middle School

Nassau County police were called to Long Beach Middle School on Thursday morning for an unidentified written threat. Shortly after Patch learned of police activity at the school, Superintendent David Weiss confirmed that police had investigated at the building but he declined to provide details about the incident.

Syntax, the Long Beach School District’s public relations firm, said in an follow-up email that it was too early Thursday morning for the superintendent to discuss details about why police were called to the school. However, the district e-mailed the following message to parents on Thursday, according to Syntax:

“Early this morning [Thursday], Long Beach High School’s administration was notified by the Nassau County Police Department that a verbal threat was made by a high school student late yesterday [Wednesday] afternoon, after school hours. The Nassau County Police Department conducted an investigation and found no validity to this threat.

“On a completely different and unrelated issue, also taking place earlier this morning, a middle school student noticed a written threat on a wall of a boys bathroom and reported to school officials, who immediately contacted the Nassau County Police Department. Police conducted an investigation and deemed this threat to be non-credible and classes resumed as normal.

“The individuals responsible for both of the aforementioned threats have been identified and the appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken.

“While these matters have become all too commonplace in our society, it is of the utmost importance that we take these threats seriously, as the health and safety of our students and staff is our first priority.

“Please know that the district works very closely with local law officials routinely and every precaution is taken on a daily basis to protect the safety of our students and staff, and to provide a secure learning environment for all.”

A spokesperson for the district asked that the police release the nature of the threat. Patch has askedpolice about the threat and will have more information about this incident as it becomes available.
