City Manager on Pending Storm: Flooding is Likely

Jack Schnirman issues a message about the winter storm that is expected to hit the barrier island late Wednesday into Thursday.

Long Beach City Manager Jack Schnirman on Wednesday issued the following message on the winter storm that is forecasted to hit the barrier island late today into Thursday.

The City Council has requested that I advise you of a storm that is approaching – rest assured, we are monitoring the situation extremely closely.

Please be mindful that flooding is likely, particularly on the north side of the city.
We anticipate that there may be a moderate amount of water in the street in some areas, and some beach erosion is anticipated as well.

Here’s what you can do:

Please consider bringing in or tying down outdoor items and consider positioning your cars on higher ground if you’re in an area that typically experiences flooding.

While we remain vulnerable in the wake of Sandy, our public works crews have built and reinforced temporary sand barriers on the beach, protecting the City from more significant flooding over the past several months.

We will post updates online when necessary.

- City Manager Jack Schnirman

Among the comments posted on the city's Facebook page in response to the city manager's message:

BlackWidow Dawn: "It would be nice if resudents could be permitted to park over the train station for the night. Perhaps a permit waiver for the day?"

Jordan J. Farkas: "When I dropped my kids off at the high school last Wednesday morning the water was at the bulk head due to full moon. I hope we won't have more than a few inches over the bulk head this time and hopefully the bay will be addressed by the Army Corps when they offer a solution for the dunes."

Linda Schachter Wright:
"It will be high tide soon, so please give the residents in the canal a safe place to park asap."
