HGTV Show Taps Long Beach Home for Makeover

John and Lori Enright and their six children have lived on the top floor of their three-story expanded bungalow in Long Beach since Hurricane Sandy destroyed the other two floors in October. Now they’ll gladly move to a motel as the home gets a makeover from a surprising source.

A crew of 100 volunteers from the new HGTV show “Spontaneous Construction” arrived at their six-bedroom home, at 72 Michigan St., last Friday to announce to that it was selected for post-hurricane renovations. The volunteers are expected to reconstruct the home in about a week, according to Newsday.

John Enright, a 52-year-old manager at Bed, Bath & Beyond in Oceanside, said about HGTV’s unexpected visit:

"I'm shocked, completely shocked. I can't believe what everybody is doing for us."

The episode featuring the West End family is scheduled to air on the cable TV network, along with a segment about it on the The View, in April.

The Enrights said that they received some but not much Federal Management Agency funding and insurance money for their home that sustained flooding in the basement that came up through its floors.

Last November, Patch reported on the Enrights’ neighbors, John and Barbara McCauley, who said their bungalow at 22 Michigan St., which sits just yards from the beach, didn’t get a drop of water inside during the hurricane. The storm waters, though, knocked away their front porch and buried their home and others on their street in sand that once were the dunes.
