As Patch reported that afternoon, the Long Beach Fire Department had already answered some 20 calls, many of them from motorists stranded in high flood waters as several blocks that run along Park Avenue were closed due to severe flooding. One call was from an elderly pedestrian stuck almost waist-deep in a sinkhole near a construction area at Roosevelt Boulevard and East Park Avenue. Firefighters pulled the unharmed pedestrian to safety.

After the storm a resident with a home on Reynolds Channel contacted Patch about extensive flooding on her block, Curley Street in the Canals, which she said was reconstructed with new sewers and pipes about six years ago yet it still floods during normal heavy rain.

Before Friday’s storm, the city's Facebook page announced, according to forecaster, "it does not appear that we will have any significant coastal flooding. There will likely be flooding in the roads, which typically occurs during heavy rain, but we do not anticipate anything significant from the beach or bay."

Updates on the page later Friday noted "more than a foot of water on Roosevelt Avenue [Boulevard]..." Council President Scott Mandel was quoted as saying: "This isn't something Long Beach can't handle. We've gone through ten times worse." Other updates stated that the Department of Public Works had cleared a blockage on National Boulevard and was working further east, later clearing Riverside Boulevard, and urged people to remain indoors until the rain subsided.

As weather forecasters predict another 1 to 3 inches of rain across Long Island on Monday, Patch would like to know how your streets, homes and businesses fared during these storms. Let us know in the comments below.
