Cuomo Announces New Extension for Sandy Relief

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced Thursday that New Yorkers who lost their jobs or income due to Hurricane Sandy have an extension to Feb. 28, to apply for federal disaster unemployment assistance.

“The physical destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy in New York was unprecedented, and as a result, many New Yorkers have been put out of work,”  said Cuomo who was touring downstate on Thursday and delivered an address on the SUNY Old Westbury campus.

“These federal funds will continue to help those who are still trying to get back on their feet," Cuomo said.

Disaster unemployment benefits are available to provide financial support to anyone who has lost their job and live or work in Nassau, Suffolk, the five boroughs of New York City, Westchester and upstate counties as far north as Ulster.

To apply for unemployment benefits or disaster unemployment assistance, those affected by the storm and have lost their job or income should call the Telephone Claims Center (TCC) at 1-888-209-8124, or 1-877-358-5306 if they live out of state.

Applicants should answer the questions to indicate they lost their job due to Hurricane Sandy.Additional news available at www.governor.ny.gov

SMC, if u are self employed even though you have to pay into the system you are not eligible to collect unemployment Ins. All smal Biz owners have to pay into the system and if they go out of Biz there is no unemployment benefit. It's been this way forever.

Don't self employed people pay income taxes? Dont self employed people pay twice the social security tax rate? They should be eligible.

Jack, yes you are correct. Self employed, independent contractors, business owners etc are in illegible to collect unemployment benefits. This is the reward the small biz man/woman has to pay for taking the risk to become successful and maybe create a few jobs along the way. Didn't you know that anyone who owns a business is rich and should pay their fair share. Snark.

Howie, you are right about self employment and not being able to collect. But, that is why they have Disaster Unemployment, your suppose to be covered for this and yet I have not received anything. Every piece of paper and all information has been filled out that they have asked for. Where's the help?
