Full Boardwalk Opens in Long Beach

LBHS marching band brings pomp and circumstance to ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday.

Cyclists, runners and walkers can now travel the new Long Beach boardwalk unobstructed. 

The Long Beach High School Marines Marching Band headlined the ribbon-cutting ceremony to open of the full 2.2-mile walkway Friday afternoon.

After local elected officials gave speeches at Long Beach Boulevard, the band marched from that spot to New York Avenue, the western end of the new tropical hardwood structure, and returned. This was the first time the LBHS marching band marched on the boardwalk, the Long Beach School District said.

The afternoon ceremony followed an earlier announcement by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on the boardwalk that the state will cover the remaining $9.3 million in costs to rebuild the walkway that the Federal Emergency Management Agency will not reimburse the City of Long Beach for the $44 million project.
