In a show of solidarity, strength and hope, Long Beachers united New Year's Eve to shine a light on their collective journey.

The first annual Long Beach Luminary event encouraged locals and businessowners to display flameless candles in paper bags outside. Several hundred people participated, lighting the streets of the barrier island.

At West Elementary folks were able to light the entire perimeter of the Beech Street school yard and spell out "West, LB," according to Antonia Piccione-Capofarri on the Facebook event page.

The event was organized by Jessie Fahy Farrell.
