“Superstorm Sandy devastated homes and businesses in communities like Long Beach,” the Red Cross said in a statement about the initiative. “According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season is forecast to be extremely active. Unfortunately, a recent Red Cross survey shows that despite Sandy’s devastation, many coastal residents across the New York/New Jersey region have not taken the measures needed to prepare.”

The Red Cross said that officials will discuss steps residents should take now to prepare their families as Long Island enters the heart of hurricane season.
