Report: LB Has 2nd Highest Paid Police & Fire Dept in NY!

Get up to minute LB Political reports by following me on Twitter: @jimhennessylbny

According to the recently released report from the Empire Center for Public Policy,
an independent, non-partisan, non-profit think tank based in Albany,  Long Beach's police officers and firefighters were the second (2nd) highest paid employees of all cities throughout New York state with an average annual salary of $127,660.

The salary comparison chart can be viewed by clicking the image above this blog.

The report covers the 2012- 2013 the same year the Mandel Goggin Administration took over city hall and Mike Tangney became Police Commissioner. The report does NOT appear to take into account the recent police contract award which gave the Long Beach Police a 27% raise. The Long Beach Fire Department is currently working without a contract as their's has expired.

According to their website, the empire center's mission is to "Make New York a better place to live and work by promoting public policy reforms grounded in free-market principles, personal responsibility, and the ideals of effective and accountable government."

The report (which can be downloaded by clicking HERE) comes on the heals of recently obtained crime data that shows a dramatic increase in violent crime in the City of Long Beach since January 2012 when the Mandel-Goggin Administration took over city hall and Mike Tangney was made the Police Commissioner and made $302,000 for the year.

According to the data, since Mike Tangney made $302,000 in 2012 and LB police earned the second highest salary of all citiesin New York State:

  • Burglaries increased 167%
  • Shootings increased 33%
  • Robberies increased 27%
  • Aggravated Assault (assaults with a weapon) increased 9%
Therefore, while the Long Beach Police & Fire Departments became the 2nd highest paid departments of all cities throughout New York State, crime has surged to record levels, residents have been forced to pay over 15% more in property taxes, the Mandel-Goggin administration borrowed an additional $77 million, Mike Tangney made $302,000 last year and City Manager Jack Schnirman made over $150,000.

Something doesn't sound right....

How much of  a raise did you get last year?

How much did your taxes go up?

Something to think about.....
