Do I need an Architect?
Long Island Builders Institute, a local non-profit organization established in 1941, realizes that carrying out projects both large and small in your home or business can be stressful. “How do I know if I need an architect, or maybe just a contractor?” might be a question you find yourself asking. Luckily, this week’s “Tip of the Week” will help you make that decision.
- Both architects and contractors alike have the ability to save you money through their knowledge on using space and materials cost effectively. However, both industry professionals problem solve differently. For example, a contractor’s eye is drawn to the most economical and practical design solution but an architect’s might offer a solution that pleases the eye, gives nice curb appeal, and compliments the existing style, flow, and craftsmanship.
- Is your project large or small? The bigger the job, or the more valuable the property, the more you will need an architect.
- To put it simply, “Anytime you are changing the exterior of the building, making significant alterations to the floor plan inside, or spending more than 5% of the value of the house, you want an architect,” says Stamford, Conn., construction manager William Harke.
