In this week’s “Tip of the week” we will be discussing mold removal, what causes it, how to prevent it, and what you can do to take care of an existing issue.

1. Moisture causes mold, pain and simple. The key to controlling an existing or future mold issue is to control all moisture. Mold has the ability to feed off of almost every building material so it’s nearly impossible to eliminate a feeding source all together. The best way to eliminate mold problems is to remove any water issues.

2. In order to help prevent future mold problems, make sure the dirt surrounding your home is slightly sloped away so water flows away, not towards your structure. Any water that gathers against the outer walls of your home can lead to water leakage and mold growth inside of your home.

3. 5 basic principles for successful mold removal remediation:

  • Safety – Protect all workers and those living in the home.
  • Assessment – Make an assessment during and after mold remediation.
  • Contamination Control – Prevent cross-contamination and the spread of mold from contaminated areas to non-contaminated.
  • Source Removal – Remove all mold at its source.
  • Moisture Removal – Eliminate the moisture source that caused the initial mold issue.
