People are putting out the entire contents of their homes including construction/demolition debris, which the city is NOT responsible for picking up. Tell your neighbors to get a dumpster for the demo/construction rubbish so the city can get back to picking up household trash. And maybe if people did not park their cars so as to block access to the trash, more could be removed. People, if your car died in this storm, make the necessary arrangements to have it towed away. A little personal responsibility and common sense would go a long way. How about holding on to your recycling until things get back to normal?? How about taking a broom and sweeping up in front of your own home?
JohnnyBoy November 14, 2012 at 12:14 PM
How about Sanitation doing their job and picking up the garbage instead of garbage picking for themselves and also not doing "favors" for cash. Again, take a trip over the bridge and see EVERYTHING being picked up by other sanitation crews, all in a well executed manner. It sounds like you had a pick up since the storm. WE DID NOT!
LBMom November 14, 2012 at 01:14 PM
Actually, I have quite a bit of trash not from storm to be picked up plus all the recycling from having to use bottled water for the 16 (count 'em) people we housed after the storm. We all got out and helped to clean our block and pick up rubbish off the lawns of our neighbors who evacuated or are elderly and unable to do it themselves. We rallied and shared gas and ran cords to each other. We are keeping most of our garbage off the street (as much as possible) until things are normalized. This was a catastrophe in an already dysfunctional and broke city. Many who live here are renters. Where are the property owners? Are they doing the right thing? I think not. If they got dumpsters for the demo debris that would do a lot to improve the situation.
JohnnyBoy November 14, 2012 at 01:29 PM
ANSWER THE QUESTION!! Did you have ANY GARBAGE pick up since the storm???
LBMom November 14, 2012 at 01:34 PM
Why are you yelling at me? You did not ask me that question until now. This conversation is over.
JohnnyBoy November 14, 2012 at 01:46 PM
Believe me LBMOM.. Your conversation was over long ago.
toolittle November 14, 2012 at 02:45 PM
I agree, something needs to be done FAST about the garbage situation.
wikyjalo November 14, 2012 at 02:58 PM
We have not had any garbage pick up and today I found a City of Long Beach employee picking through my garbage for extension cords and electrical equipment. I questioned what he was doing and he pointed to the garbage truck two house down. That same garbage truck passed by the house without taking ANYTHING. Why are City Employees permitted to pick through our damaged goods? Very uncouth. This occured on the 600 block of W. Market St.
JohnnyBoy November 14, 2012 at 03:35 PM
Just spoke to my sister in Oceanside. Sanitation everywhere picking up. Maybe the City Manager should take a ride up there and learn how it is done. Again, I haven't heard issues in Oceanside of separating garbage, no construction debris, etc. All garbage has to get the hell out of here soon or you will soon have health, fire and environmental issues.

call the Governor's office 518-474-8390 file a complaint ASAP.. Call all the media and alert them I did!
JohnnyBoy November 14, 2012 at 03:44 PM
Let the media know there is also "selective" garbage pick up streets. Still waiting for my first pick up in almost 3 weeks.
Drea Crysel November 14, 2012 at 05:31 PM
Johnny, RJ: Good work! Thanks to you and everyone who made calls & sent the governors office photo evidence of garbage situation, Cuomo sent additional man power, trucks & dumpsters to LB today. Hope everyone will continue reporting in over the next week on garbage pick up progress or lack of it.. so we can keep the governors office informed.
JohnnyBoy November 14, 2012 at 07:27 PM
Thanks for the overdo good news Drea. Now lets hope they can clean the mess up in the areas most affected and neglected.
RJ November 14, 2012 at 07:37 PM
Thanks Drea .. Great news Cuomo sent the help we need. I agree that we need to continue to monitor the situation and progress. I heard today that their were finally trucks on some of the narrow blocks in the west end starting to clear blocks. Johnny I know you'll be keeping an eye out too :)
JohnnyBoy November 14, 2012 at 08:06 PM
FYI...go to the Facebook page Citizens for Long Beach, NY to stay informed of the status of these and other events and where to contact the media.

So here we are another day into this mess and no sanitation in sight. Made more phone calls to deaf ears. Saw the City Manager this morning doing a photo op with Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano at the skating rink. I was thinking about asking(yelling) at him about Sanitation issue but didn't feel like getting carted away by Secret Service. If anybody saw sanitation today feel free to respond. I think we need to have a demonstration at City Hall in re to this travesty. The media has to be reawaken.
Karen Adamo November 15, 2012 at 12:08 PM
I agree w/ nic. The sanitation department is doing a great job And so is the city manager and his team. the amount of debris is almost insurmountable and will take time to get rid oft it. find something constructive to do with yourself
JohnnyBoy November 15, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Yes Karen.. A great job by Sanittation. I personally witness the following events by Sanitation....1.carting away two house's garbage for cash. 2..Driving backwards down my block to pick up a air conditioner for their personal use. 3. Unloading hand picked items from their trucks to their personal vehicles and all this on Department time. I would do something more constructive but I have no room in the front of the house to put anything. I ask YOU, have you had ANY garbage pick ups since the storm? It is so easy to critize others who have nothing when you are receiving city services.
L P November 15, 2012 at 09:23 PM
Actually, I live in Oceanside and have had exactly one garbage pickup since the storm in my neighborhood, which barely made a dent. The view from my front porch looks like a warzone, with trash, furniture and debris everywhere.
JohnnyBoy November 15, 2012 at 10:07 PM
L P... Most areas of Oceanside have had at least 2 pick ups of ALL garbage. The Superintendent of Sanitation of Nassau County has stated "these people have been through enough, I not going to tell them to separate items in their garbage for pick up". Words of wisdom that certain individuals in Long Beach public office could learn from...

Correction..."I am not"
RJ November 15, 2012 at 10:48 PM
We had heavy equipment removing mountains of rubbish today in the west end. There so much it will take them days to clean it up. So sad it had to get this out of control because of no pick ups in 15 days...it will now take that much longer to clean up.. but I'm happy just to see it's being addressed and being taken care of.. it's a start!
Patrick Smith November 16, 2012 at 03:56 AM
