Dangerously Quick Park Ave Traffic Lights

I believe the timing of Park Ave traffic lights are dangerously short.  I was crossing Lincoln with my pregnant wife and my toddler in a stroller last weekend.  We always walk briskly across Park being very aware of the short timing between lights.  As we approaching the other end of Park, we were nearly run over by a distracted driver (who was actually stopped) and decided to punch the gas seeing that the other light was about to turn red.  Being that we were barely making the light I know most people would just say "Why not just walk half way across, and wait for the next light"?  This is something I refuse to do, especially since there have been several accidents in the middle of this intersection alone, and I feel extremely vulnerable standing unprotected in the center of a six lane thorough fare.

So I challenge anyone who is reading this - Can you make it completely across Park Ave before the light turns green?  I am a healthy, fit, young adult male, and even with a brisk walk, my feet have never touched the far sidewalk without the light having already changed over!  How could anyone expect someone with children, the elderly, or physically challenged to safely make it across Park?  Is this just a Lincoln Blvd issue or has anyone else also experienced this?

I also ask - Can't we have cross walk buttons at the intersections?  I'm not asking for the numbered countdown displays, just a button that lets the traffic light know there is a pedestrian trying to cross.  I know there are other boulevards that have them, is there a way to petition the City for one?  If the implementation cost is too much, can't they just give the lights an extra 5 seconds, expecially on weekends, when there is a larger number of pedestrians crossing?  Or maybe some sort of barrier in between Park to safely stand behind?

Please, take the challenge, and see where your feet land when the light turns green.
