Letter to the Editor: Long Beach Will Miss Peter King

Writer calls Carolyn McCarthy a rubber-stamp for her party.

To the Editor:

With the recent redistricting of Long Island’s Congressional lines, Long Beach will no longer be in Peter King’s district. I’ll miss King. I believe that Long Beach might miss King.

King combines a regular-guy manner with the sophistication of being on the cutting edge of international politics.  His ascension to chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee gave him a prestige and recognition that reflected well for the communities he represented. Irish-Americans recall his key involvment in helping broker the Irish Peace Accords.

He has always been a standard-bearer for his party, and his principled and sometimes tough stance on social, world and security issues made him a favorite of conservatives. However, he also has shown  flexibility and independence, evidenced by his support of President Clinton during the House impeachment vote and by his cultivation of close relationships with key Long Beach Democrat leadership.

In King’s place we get Carolyn McCarthy. In my opinion, McCarthy is an unimpressive rubber-stamp for her party who has never sponsored significant legislation. To this extent, her endlessly being returned to office by an unaccounting constituency and her lack of gravitas makes her a perfectly-matching bookend to go along with Long Beach’s state representative.

I don't want to talk about King like he’s gone; if re-elected, he will continue in Congress representing south-shore communities from Seaford to Islip. I’ll miss King. I hope he misses us and remembers Long Beach.

To ADNK. I own a house in the Town of Oyster Bay. Is that good enough for you to let me vote there? Long Beach has City MANAGERS THAT DON'T EVEN LIVE IN LONG BEACH, What do you think of that? And NY has had Senators from Massachusetts and from Arkansas. Perfectly fine in your book?
Lloyd April 04, 2012 at 02:51 PM
UDL..I post plenty of conservative opnions on here. And many are considered way over the top by my liberal buddies. But they don't get deleted by the Patch staff. The readers themselves can flag them as inappropriate and then they are automatically wiped out. So maybe you "offended" 3 people on here with your opposing viewpoints. I was posting for a while on the Huffington Post with Conservative opinions. And I am proud to say they banned me.
Ivan Bexter April 04, 2012 at 02:57 PM
Newsflash!! Waterboarding is not torture... Listening to a liberal claim it is... Is TORTURE..
John April 04, 2012 at 03:38 PM
with such well reasoned, rationale and civil dialogue such as what you've displayed here, I'm shocked to read something you had posted might have been deleted. Glad to hear you consider any american's view that differs from yours to be socialist america-haters residing in a cesspool. it's really very american of you to think that way and your high level of dialogue is surely to move our country in a positive direction.

As long as they only vote where they're registered, I'm just fine.
Lloyd April 04, 2012 at 05:45 PM
ADNK...I only vote once each year and its been in the same place for the past 30 years...where I own a house and get mail. So I have 2 residences. Dont want to change my voting residency because then I couldnt vote for Peter King or John Venditto. Its all totally legitt.

Can someone tell me why Long Beach is the only town on Long Island with a paid fire department? It costs us over $4 million a year and on average we have about 10 fires a year? Let's get rid of it and replace it with an EMT/Ambulance service and save millions!! Our medical insurance will pay for the service and our taxes will drop. In these tough times let's think of ways to cut our bloated city budget and the paid FD with over 20 paid people making over $150,00/year while working a few days a month is a good place to start!
Eddie April 06, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Nobody hates waste, mismanagement and high taxes more than I, but I think your anger is somewhat misdirected. It's the paid Fire Department that man the ambulances here and provide the very quick response time. With a large elderly population, short response time saves lives. And I really doubt any one of the LB firemen make $150,000 a year. The way I see the math, the paid department probably costs each homeowner about $200 per year. No, I'm not a fireman, but I think there is much more to cut in the police department, and much, much more to cut in the exempt (management) employees of this beach before we oust the fire department.
Lloyd April 07, 2012 at 05:08 AM
I see lots of fire trucks speeding down Broadway everday. Sounds like 3 or 4 fires a day out there, unless they are running to resuscitate some old guy having a bad case of heartburn. But these overly generous retirement pensions of the FD and PD are bankrupting us.

McCarthy is a drunk and an old hag that has one and only position - to dismantle the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution.
Jack April 11, 2012 at 03:38 AM
So by your comment, I suppose that you would rather invite KSM to tea instead? The only people that got waterboarded were the most viscious and violent terrorists. They should have been tortured - for years at a time.

Here's an assertion "Jack",You ran out of the Oxycontin filled eggs that you uncovered at Uncle Rush's Easter Egg Hunt. And judging by the use of slanderous words escaping your disgusting mouth you're simply someone reduced to being a monster.
Jack April 12, 2012 at 09:08 PM
What majority party are you referring to? Fact check weasel. The Democrats had super majorities in the House and Senate FOR TWO YEARS! They with Obama could do anything they wanted. They did not ask, nor did they need Republican help to pass their failed socialist jobs act, something you call "Stimulus." Did that create any jobs? NO. For two years, they squandered OUR MONEY on shovel ready projects that did not exist, ran up 5 TRILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT, and increased the deficit of the "failed economic policies of the Bush Administration" from $400 million per year to over $1.4 Trillion! But somehow, despite these inconvenient little items commonly called facts, you believe that it is all those evil Republican's fault? Let me state this again, because obviously you are incapable of rational thought. GOVERNMENT DOES NOT CREATE JOBS. INVESTORS CREATE JOBS. And if your messiah Obama the communists he placed within all government agencies would get out of the way of business people and investors, we would have more jobs.

"In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the Despot, Abetting his abuses in Return for protection to his own. Christianity Neither is, Nor Ever was, a Part of the Common Law." Thomas Jefferson George W. Bush said: 'I feel like God wants me to run for President. I can't explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me. Something is going to happen... I know it won't be easy on me or my family, but God wants me to do it.' Jack you have been directing snarky remarks at me, & you don't even know me. Where have I said that President Obama is the Messiah? Do you ONLY know how to converse with people by putting your own secular humanist revisionist words in other mouths? I am very disappointed in President Obama for a few of his political stances on issues like Energy & the Dept. of Agriculture (particularly having the ex CEO Of Monsanto head up the Dept. of Agriculture!) But if you're trying to instigate a rise out of me, forget it. The argument about a President acting as if he was Messiah should have been argued 10 years ago. You can not hold an intellectual conversation. I imagine talking to you in person must be as torturous as being sexually harassed by Mark Foley, A.Weiner, L.Craig, B. Clinton, &B.O'Reilly combined. A Democracy (With a majority in power) still is the slowest form of Gov. in the history or the world. 2001 was a perfect storm for real progress to occur, but Bush expedited failure instead.
Eddie April 13, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Ever say the "Pledge of Allegiance"? If Mr. Dunes had been paying attention in Third Grade, he would have learned that the United States is not a democracy. Let me enlighten you. It's a Republic.
Mr Dunes April 13, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Like a banana republic This country is so close to becoming a third world nation with it's poor education system, poor economy. Governed by an elite of the "most qualified", which in the minds of conservatives means themselves and their wealthy buddies. At any rate, a democracy does NOT have to be a direct democracy. Merriam-Webster's definition includes the sense of representative government. So the US is supposed to be a TYPE of democracy. And a republic is any independent country that doesn't have a monarchy. Iraq was a republic, fer Pete's sake! Iran is an "Islamic republic"! China is a "people's republic"! What's more, the UK is not a republic. Neither is Japan. But they are "parliamentary democracies"! Yet, while people in those countries vote for members of Parliament/Diet, they do not vote for the prime ministers of their respective countries.he U.S. is a democracy -- just not a direct one. Every branch of our government -- executive, legislative, judicial, monetary -- ultimately derives its power from majority rule or approval. By making our democracy indirect instead of direct, the Founders prevented unrestrained mob rule, allowing a more reasonable pace of majority rule, and greater room for compromise.
Mr Dunes April 13, 2012 at 12:59 PM
Conservatives continually point out that America is not a democracy, but a constitutional republic. This is a quibble over definitions, because a constitutional republic is a type of democracy. Democracy comes in two forms: direct and republican. In a direct democracy, the people vote directly on proposed laws, and government (to the extent that it exists) serves only to put their laws into action. By contrast, a republic is a representative democracy, where laws are passed not by the people, but their elected representatives. Adding the term "constitutional" to the word "republic" is frivolous, since all nations have constitutions. Why, then, do conservatives insist on this distinction? There are two reasons, both of them trivial. One is to embarrass those who make casual use of the term "democracy." Another is that conservatives are so hostile to democracy that they seek to deny its very name. But a democracy we are. No matter which branch of government you look into, you'll find the fingerprints of democracy everywhere:

This guy Dunes is a real piece of work. He seems like some sort of bad teacher, reciting theories and quotes he found, yet he as never offered one piece evidence of real world experience. I bet anything that he has never created, nor managed a single job in his life. Do you have any real world experience, chump? Or are you just regurgitating the propaganda you were told to repeat? Now, why is Obama your messiah? Because you seem to preach the socialist and communist principles that are the hallmark of his administrations. You hate the public education system, yet you do not acknowledge that they are controlled by a socialist oligarchy, especially here in NY. The teachers and their unions are out for themselves and would reject anything that would threaten their guaranteed employment and pensions - neither of which have contributed anything to our children's education. And you rant that this country is governed by elites, yet again you fail to mention Obama and the ultra leftist extremists he put in power, such as Van Jones, a devout communist that was made green jobs czar. And let's not forget that the biggest contributors to Obama's campaign in 2008 were from Wall Street! Yet somehow, despite these facts, you think that it is conservative people who hold the power in this country. You are obviously either a deranged and delusional individual, or so blinded by your gutter leftist politics, that facts and reason need not apply.
John April 13, 2012 at 05:45 PM
Jack, why so much hate? Chill out. It's hyper-partisan bloviation such as yours that's ground our country to a halt and eviscerated our ability to find compromise and middle ground. do you really think your dialogue here is productive?

We can try and see if it makes a big difference.
Mr Dunes April 28, 2012 at 11:59 PM
Trying like queen Catherine of Spain, trying Adolf Hitler of Germany, or Darfur shouldn't be the choices you make. It's crossing quite a lot of boundaries when you turn into a seclusive, or hostile society.
Candygram for Mongo April 29, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Perhaps you would like to give it a try, Ivan?

Assuming I have no worldly experience is a pathetic reach. I started young as a volunteer for Camp Anchor, (god forbid a loved one of yours has a disability that camp is the best organization with heartfelt individuals motivated for the well being of everyone who desires an enlightening opportunity which you may not Jack) I've travelled to Uganda, for a number of virtuous organizations. I'm currently the owner of one two businesses. And will start a third by the years end. I don't want to go tid for tat. Clearly your assumptions are nebulous in nature. I travelled to Israel, Egypt, Brazil, U.K. & plan to represent my personal, American-influenced, values in all future endeavours. I perceive you to be of a Tea Partying-Fundamentalist Radical ideology. I'm sure your "conservative friends" (who never protested the bush's pharma funded injection, the war in Iraq and the tax cuts which were the systemic creators of debt, and why this country is plunging into the status of a third world nation (similar to the corruption I am confronted with when my NPG assists other nations while simultaneously improving the USA's reputation) instead of the beacon of capitalism which ended with greatest generation.) are going to respond to this with baseless McCarthystic accusations. This message is intended for them too. I'm a patriotic American no matter what words your biased partisan attacks are. All the tea partyers should listen to this: the first country the Nazis invaded was their own.

Very nice bio, Mr. Dunes. It seems we have something in common. We both have a Brazilian connection. If you check out my profile pictures you'll see it. Over here we do everything Brazilian from ..eating, to drinking, to dancing, to music listening, to vacationing in Rio and to speaking Portuguese. What's your connection?
