A 12-year-old boy, Ezra Cornman, died after a sand tunnel that he and his brother were digging at a beach in Long Branch, N.J., collapsed and trapped him under the sand on Tuesday, according to the Asbury Park Press. Lifeguards pulled the boy from the sand and administered CPR, but he died the next day at Monmouth Medical Center.
There have been at least 16 beach-hole-related deaths between 1990 and 2010, according to CBS News. Some believe making these makeshift tunnels should be banned on beaches, with “No Digging” sings posted and tickets given who those who fail to observe them.
